We go on about dodgy decisions, but that one is up there with the worst. Surely the sight of the player lying with a broken jaw must have made him suspect there had been some foul play?

The game hasn't changed that much, it was a terrible decision and was recognised as such at the time. If memory serves me correctly Bob Valentine was being touted to get the final but his lack of help from the line cost him that place

Brazil 82 is possibly the most overrated team ever in my opinion. Some great players (Socrates one of my favourite players ever) but I get the impression English hacks in particular drool over them because it takes the limelight away from Argentina and the Germans domination. Italy were absolutely sensational in that game, and then went on lift the trophy in style, but you never ever hear folk waxing lyrical about Italy 82 as much as Brazil 82.

Competely agree, at the end of the day they were far more experienced. If it had been the following season or later we would have, probably, humped them. I think that day we were guilty, my self included, of thinking we would walk it as we were the far bigger club.

We were then and still are. An alternative viewpoint may be that, similar to last years SC, we were paying players what we could afford to pay and they were paying players (like Archie, Fernandez and Andrews) way above what they could afford and had just entered administration as a result.

BACK ON THREAD ....

In 1971-72 the English First Division was a 4-horse race between Derby County, Liverpool, Manchester City and Dirty Leeds United.

For some unexplained reason DLU were allowed to play their last game, a postponed game against Wolves, on the Monday night after the other three teams had completed their fixtures. DLU had by far the best goal average (as league placings were calculated at the time) all they needed to do was draw against the tenth-placed side to win the championship.

They lost 2-1 and Brian Clough's Derby won the title.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1971%E2%80%9372_Football_League

A few years later, Mike O'Grady, a midfielder who had played for Leeds before moving to Wolves, alleged that Revie had approached him before the game offering financial inducements to the Wolves players to throw the game. O'Grady said that this approach was what made the Wolves players determined to win what was an otherwise fairly meaningless game for them.

Strangely enough, Don Revie, then England manager, resigned from that position to to take up a coaching job in Saudi Arabia just before these allegations were published ....

Strangely enough (again), the FA decided not to pursue an investigation into these allegations ....

Nor - strangely enough yet again - did Mr Revie sue the newspaper (The Sun) to clear his good name ....
