Excellent stuff Jonnyboy. The fact the commentary team from 1951 had the foresight to call" "them", The Rangers didn't go by me!!!

I remember being at the East Fife game huddled up under the old coo shed roof. Happy days indeed and what a turn of pace Houchy showed for goal 2 :greengrin

Some finish by Gordon Rae there, but what a great little footballer Ally McLeod was. Great cross for the first , very clever pass that was perfectly weighted for the second and a fine penalty to round off his performance. We don't have many like him round these parts no more :not worth (apart fi Leigh likesay)

Yeah very good strike rate in a team that was at the early stages of a downward turn. 1 in less than 3 is not to be sniffed at by anyone at any level.

What I like in this video is Keith Houchen's elbow to the defender's coupon before scoring the second, and David Syme making it VERY clear what he'd given the penalty for! :greengrin

See, this is when football was football:

1. No silky skills on show at all.
2. Ball looking like it weighs 100lbs
3. No umbrella and **** wet through on the terraces at half time, freezing your nuts off and no where to go.
4. Subs with rugs on their legs.
5. The need to step out of a 'dug-out'
6. Massive wasted space in the family 'enclosure'.
7. A big ole under soil heating generator taking up more potential supporter space.
8. Everyone huddling under the cowshed to at least stay dry if not warm.
9. The massive dunbar end, grey, dull and miserable.
10. Willie McEwan. The thinking man's Tam McCourt. Always around but for no good reason.

Fitba'!

I think McLeod was under appreciated. He was actually very skillful as well as a decent goal scorer.

Although, in fairness, I saw him take what must have been the most pathetic attempt ever at a penalty kick at Brockville. Ally being Ally, he made up for it shortly after by scoring a cracker in open play.

Despite Miller's team's at ER being bookended by mediocrity, he actually, cough -splutter, produced some fine footballing sides in between. He was never going to please an element of the support because of his Hunnish background and his downbeat manner didn't do much for him in the PR stakes. My main criticism's would be that he was too cautious in his tactics and that he never resolved the left back issue in the ten or so years of his managership ( Joe T, Graeme Love etc, etc).

Sure Tortolano scored at the very first game I watched. It was a 3-0 home win against Dumbarton. Midweek game If I mind right. be about 88 I think. He always seemed to get a bit stick but on his day he was not a bad player.

He was a great player and when he arrived at Hibs he looked an ideal replacement for Joe McBride jnr. However, instead of keeping him on the left wing where he could run down the touchline and sling in crosses for fun, Alex Miller 'transformed' him into a left back - unfortunately he couldn't tackle a fish supper and the boo boys were on his back straight away.

Spot on, and I sadly was probably one of them

This is a true story and I kid you not with this.

In the days before Sky Sports the only way to view English games was anywhere with Border Television.

One Sunday we were out at Bonnyrigg Rose club to see Liverpool vs Everton cup tie game, who was in the games room himself but none other than Mr Goram playing pool on his own, we asked for a game and away we went.

During the game I asked him about Joe T, he said to us that he was an out and out left winger and loved playing that position and was well pissed off at Miller for playing him at left back.

He also told us that in training Joe used to hit 20/25 yard free kicks that Goram in his own words never had a chance to get near them but as soon as Joe ran out on the pitch at a game his confidence was in bits, Goram then told us that a few of his teammates had suggested to Miller to allow Joe to either play on the wing or at least be designated to take free kicks in good positions for a pop at goal, both were refused.

Make that of what you may but I think it sums up Miller, had the chance but blew it big time despite guiding us to the Skol Cup Final victory, he also signed some great players as well but seemed to want to play them in positions they were unaccustomed to.

Just looking at some of these clips with Miller in charge I wish I had kept my big mouth shut slagging him off most of the time but the 22 games in a row fiasco against "them" ran deep.

This makes total sense :agree: I distinctly recall Joe on the pitch in the half time break when Hibs played Anderlecht at ER. He took a few free kicks from around the 25 yard mark and every one went in at the top corner!

Joe was much maligned at ER and he knew it but he still follows Hibs to this day and is an incredibly nice and very funny guy :agree:

Jonny,

Wee bit late getting to this - just showed this to my father he was at this Rangers vs Hibs 1951 1/4 final, mentioned the only other match he attended which came close to this game touching this day was the 7-3 game vs Man U. This is high praise indeed considering he also at the great Gordon Smiths debut vs Hearts!

This is the first time he's seen these goals since the match so massive thanks for sharing the link

I remember a good few years ago getting the full game free from one of the red tops. I hadn't known that Jack Charlton gets injured pretty early on and soldiers on up front for the rest of the game with what was clearly a bad injury.

Different times pre subs.
