That is far quicker than I expected.

I know the calls are for a black or Latino Pope but someone from the 21st century would be nice.

Black Pope sounds like a Blaxploitation movie from the 70s, i choose Antonio Fargas for the part

The Roman Empire had plenty of black caesars, why not a bit of black popery for a change. They asked Konte but he told them to get to ****.

Anyone betting against John Terry appearing on the balcony in full robes?

That's, by far, the most important thing. I fear another conservative though.

Wow - a 76 year old Jesuit who is about as anti-reform as is possible...Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio

HUGE mistake for the Church IMO.

Well I hope he does a good job. He looks like a nice old thing and at 76 he won't be around too long anyway. I'm still annoyed that the last guy didn't carry on.

Quitter.

I'd rather read the Bible, there's much more bigotry and scandal to be had.

Here is one interpretation:

"Aside from his universal significance, the former cardinal appears to be a strong Argentine patriot, telling Argentine veterans of the Falklands War at a Mass last year: "We come to pray for all who have fallen, sons of the Homeland who went out to defend their mother, the Homeland, and to reclaim what is theirs."

Not sure what else he'd be expected to say to such an audience - he's preaching to the converted.

Not sure why his opinion should matter tbh

No, me neither but I suppose for some, you mention Argentina and it's all about the Falklands (or Malvinas)... seriously not having a go at folk, it's just the way it is.

Pretty dodgy record in terms of collaboration with the fascist regime, and dobbing in his own Jesuit brethren. Possibly a worthy successor to his ex Hitler Youth predecessor? On the positive side, he's not a man for the corrupt, fatcat Curia set, and is less than impressed with the huge wealth of the Vatican.

Time will tell, but I wouldn't expect any radical changes any time soon...

That article doesn't read as though he has a "dodgy record", it merely states that some people feel he has questions to answer over his role. That will always be the case in circumstances such as these.

Given your "Hitler Youth" comments, I can't imagine you're seeking to be taken seriously.

For some reason, people always seem to use the word "radical" when referring to potential changes in the Catholic church. Assuming we are talking about drastic or extreme change of some sort, do people really expect this from any man elected by a conclave of men who have essentially enforced the culture which would require to be "radicalised"?

It would be like someone being elected leader of a political party by its members, then completely changing the manifesto they were elected on.

A more lighthearted take on it that does hold some truths. Many in the church have enjoyed close links with fascism since the ideology appeared.

The Vatican spokesman added: “We’re always amazed when people act surprised at the closeness of fascism and the Catholic Church. It’s as if they’re not paying attention.”
