looking at the state of scottish pitches, our in particular, then you look at the Newcastle and Arsenal pitches to name but 2 in the premier league...theirs are marvelous lush grren surfaces conducive to playing a passing game on the deck..the state of our pitch is conducive to hoofball...added to that , i am sure the team practice on astroturf which is a million miles away from the condition of all pitches in Scotland..maybe we should play on a paddock to get used to the conditions as we seem to be unable to play a passing game on these pitches

maybe i am wildly off the mark

A lot of those clubs, after the game wheel on the " artificial light" which rejuvenated the grass. ( this is not the technical term). I presume the cost prohibits them from most pitches

A bloke at the Ricoh arena told me last week that they have the artificial light on the grass throughout the week.

The pitch at Cappielow is lush and verdant and they sure don't have the funds for artificial lights. They have a groundsman who used to work on Loch Lomond golf course.
Do we have a properly trained staff? It was very wet for a period last year but not been a cold winter - pitch is really poor considering it only gets used once a fortnight for 9 months.

Without artificial uv lights, the use of undersoil heating and the height of the stands - they all take their toll on the state of the pitches up here. Morton don't have a height or undersoil heating issue so their pitch will catch whatever sun does shine during the winter months - leading to a less dried up, more lush looking surface.

I remember reading once that pitches in England cost a few million each year to maintain. Also, does the grass used in the premier league not have a synthetic element weaved into it? Something like 1 3rd of it is synthetic?

Hibs should invest in a full size artificial pitch (G5) i think is the best now at East Mains and ER. If the playing surfaces are deemed good enough for Champions League games we should be the first to implement it. Might even gie us a wee advantage. :aok:

Totally agree. The pitch down at Spartans is a fantastic surface to play on. Most of the young players coming through now grew up on these surfaces.

East Stirling play on an artificial pitch every home game and they are still bottom of the league. Good footballers should be able to play on any surface. I agree that lower league and grass roots football might benefit from these surfaces by being able to play every week regardless of the weather, but does it really make them better players?

We just invested in a new pitch, Im sure it has been laid twice since the East has been built

I know that Newcastle's pitch has this .. and it is/was very expensive.

Yes. The Emirates pitch is a composite pitch with natural grass and synthetic elements woven through it. I think most if not all of the others are the same. And yes, they ARE very expensive to lay and maintain.

I've been saying this for years now. Modern synthetic pitches are totally acceptable for top-class matches. (They'd even be OK for the SPL. :greengrin) I see no reason why Scottish clubs shouldn't lay these pitches - when we think of the wort of winter weather we suffer, it would make sense for all the teams to play on them. That, and a video camera level with the goal lines, trained on each goal.

Take what you're saying on board but how often will undersoil heating have been on this season? And Greenock is certainly a lot wetter than Edinburgh. I don't pretend to have any specialist knowledge but the Morton guy's background at a world class golf course must be a big help.

Seen a bit on sky sports news that police had donated lights that had been seized from groing weed and donated them to some uni to make one of these fancy lights that help grow the grass in the winter. Time we appropached l&b police and see if we can get a freeby

From my seat in the back row of the Famous Five Upper, you could see the main area affected was right down the length of the pitch in the shadow of the West stand. I don't imagine it'll see much in the way of sunlight at all at this time of year.

Football should be played on grass and every effort should be made to keep it that way.

This would be the story you are thinking of: http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-21756164

BBC quotes different figures but according to the sky report this will cost them about £2k as opposed to up to £100k for some of the ones they use in the EPL. Think this would be worth looking into. There are plenty drugs busts in Edinburgh and the Lothians, bet they have hundreds of these lamps sitting around...and there's certainly no shortage of golf courses and universities with Mechanical Engineering students. Plus Rod loves a bargain. Petrie, get it sorted!

The SRU have these lights at Murrayfield. May'be we could borrow them for a few weeks.

So the pitch is damaged by undersoil heating, frost, lack of sunlight, too much rain etc etc

Summer football?

Any one able to dig up info about our pitch when it was re laid at the time our east was built?
