Great guitarist. "Goin' Home" played live was a tour de force. TYA are one of the forgotten giants along with Savoy Brown and Canned Heat and others.

It’s a sad fact that as vinyl gave way to cassette tapes, then to CD I didn’t replace albums in the new mediums and tended to lose touch a bit with the music that excited me when I was a LOT younger. Since I heard of his death I have been listening again, via streaming and YouTube, to his music and remembering just how good he was, up there with the very best.

There are talented musicians in every generation, but times have changed and I just don’t hear the equivalent of Alvin, Peter Green, Rory Gallagher, Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray Vaughan, etc, etc. Different times and I know I might be a musical dinosaur but they just don’t build ‘em like that any more.

Thanks for the memories.

The bands of the past tend to get remembered for their excesses e.g. Black Sabbath, Sex Pistols etc. I saw a documentary about Mott the Hoople the other night on BBC4 which was entertaining but reminded me how creatively inept the rock business became after the early 70s. with some exceptions.

The "white" Blues explosion of the late 60s was a special time and groups like Traffic, Fleetwood Mac etc were real afficionadoes of the genre as well as being able to make commercial hits.

Sad to hear of a Alvin's passing.

Ten Years After were a Nottingham band (and practically the only top notch band the city has had it has to be said). The original band was known locally as The Jaybirds, they changed their name to Ten Years After a decade after they formed. I always thought the band's material has been a little neglected over the years, albeit with changing musical tastes. Alvin was an incredible guitarist who could play at bewildering speed. A real guitar hero whose finest hour was at the king of all rock festivals.

Wrote a few words about him a while ago. God bless the Alvin.

Alvin Lee (formerly of TYA) RIP. A true legend on the guitar and a great man as well.

I remember seeing Alvin Lee and Ten Years After along with Jethro Tull and Traffic (if memory serves) back in 1968 at the ABC. John Peel was the compere and I met him and a couple of members from the bands (not sure which). A very special memory for me. Alvin was a great showman as well as a great guitarist. I seem to recall The Woodchoppers Ball as a particular highlight. RIP.
