View Full Version : Sports Journos To Come Clean?

A newspaper columnist in the US recently wrote a piece urging his paper to reveal the political allegiances of its editors and reporters - to help their readers better evaluate their work.

"Journalists believe that they, unlike mere mortals, can transcend their personal opinions to be basically fair and objective in presenting the news. Perhaps, but readers should be the ones to judge.
To do so, they need information about the personal political views of the editors and reporters who decide what gets reported, and how, when, and where it gets reported."
Could his idea also work on Scottish sports pages where we occasionally harbour suspicions that certain reporters can be a tiny wee bit biased in favour of one team or another from time to time?

There's probably a fair comparison from the hysterical way political support is treated in the States and Old Firm favouring in our media is.

Frankly, it'd be pointless. A good journo and it won't matter who they support, it shouldn't be an issue. A bad one and everyone will still proclaim they really support whatever club anyway.

Plus given the nonsense way things are treated here, especially with the Old Firm, the second a journo declares himself a Celtic fan for example, the Orcs will start boycotting him.

They're all the same, a shower of OF-biased cliquey *****. The Scottish media in general is an embarassment, nevermind the journos. You cringe through everything from Jackie Bird and her cronies at New Year to a tenth-rate Sportscene.

Spiers and Leckie are probably the only two I have any time for. The Sportsround team and the likes of Daryll Broadfoot are ****-stains on our game.

Never happen. The west coast in particular. All those journalists in an area where there are two huge clubs that dominate yet not one journalist professes to support either of them. Hmmmmmm

To give him his due, Gordon Smith long ago outed himself as a hun supporter live on Sportsound. Can't remember his exact wording but it was along the lines of 'let's stop pretending ...' Young and Traynor started spluttering in disbelief that he'd done it, and quickly moved on to other topics.

Fair play to him then

It makes you wonder what things will be like post-independence.

Unintentionally hilarious piece in the ****** today suggesting clubs should be nicer to them, poor wee lambs...

"If newspapers are dying, as some claim, Scottish football is lying on the death bed beside them. You would think they’d be working together to make things better. You’d be wrong."

"Detractors will bang on about failing circulations until they are blue in the face. Some of them are even journalists who are now so out of touch with reality that no newspaper would employ them."

I like the out of touch part, this coming from a paper who's major story on their website was an expose on a girl who threw a shoe at Harry Styles, real hard hitting news there...

Getting butthurt about the Boyd signing also, I'm sure thats down to Kenny Shiels thinking he's a tactical genius as opposed to an agenda against the media. Articles like this is exactly why I stay away from Scottish papers...

Anyone who takes advice on being savvy from a newspaper columnist who seems to think sentence structure is something that judges give to criminals certainly does need help. They should have published that article in crayon and called it 'When I grow up I want to be a journalist.'

Also is he implying without any hint of irony that people would forget to go and watch their football team play unless they read about in their Daily Record. :greengrin:greengrin
