View Full Version : The yams main stand( a telegram)?

Just found out that they built that main stand in 1914.
Wow.
i mean WOW.
I wondered why it looked so old and crumbly.
I always laugh at it when i pass it.
If it makes it through this year, will it be sent a telegram?

What a complete shocker.I'm shocked.
What a bad stand.

Do they know this is 2013?
Someone should tell them they've forgot to build a new modern one like every other team has.
Even Spartans have a better stand.
Also Edinburgh city at Meadowbank have a more modern stand.
Probably there's another Edinburgh club around with a better stand?

And how brave are them yams who sit in it every couple of weeks.
It must be ready to fall down? They must talk about it?
They must know everyone is pointing at it.

How does it get a safety certificate?
I guess it's like a very old car.
If it survives a very long time it doesn't need an MOT anymore.
Maybe it's the same with football stands?
Must be.
Cant see a safety officer in their right mind passing that old contraption.

Anyway,just saying.

That is a bad stand likes.

If the stand is in the poor state as has been suggested it should maybe be on the 'buildings at risk' register.

Being a listed building does not mean it can't be demolished.

from the Wiki article

Many of his works have since been demolished for redevelopment (especially in wake of the Taylor Report (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taylor_Report) and the move to all-seater stadiums (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-seater_stadium)), most notably the Trinity Road Stand at Villa Park, considered his masterpiece, which was demolished in 2000.

I'm not sure the old stand at Tynie is Listed. IIRC some supporters tried to get it Listed to obstruct the sale to Cala/move to muddyfield at the end of the pieman era but I don't know if it actually happened.

I had thought it was 'B' listed. But I might just have made that up.
Like the above poster, I was last in it at the St J semi-final. I was struck by how ridiculously hazardous it felt compared to modern stands, but I have to say it was a real nostalgia trip. You could make noise with your feet!

Have only been in that 'stand' once when we beat St Johnstone in the cis semi a few years back and I was shocked at how out of date it was, a real safety hazard.
If hearts somehow scrape through this mess they are currently in with tynecastle still on the books then they are doomed anyway because they will eventually need a huge investment to bring it up to standard.

Whether it is listed or not, it shouldn't mean thay can use it on an ongoing basis. IIRC our stand was condemned by the Cooncil, necessitating a complete rebuild. Hard to imagine how that same Cooncil could have neglected to condemn the Tynie dump at the same time. Errm?

The way things are going today with the possible sale of Tyncastle, the JCB's might soon be putting any worries about the council providing any more safety certificates to bed for good.

I was last there when Budgie threw one in to give them yet again an undeserved win. I said then it was a death trap, from memory was not long after Bradford, & I've refused to let anyone from my family sit in it since, obviously not been a problem in recent years. I'm astonished its continued to get a safety certificate in all the intervening years & (seriously) am hugely thankful there's not been a tragic incident.

I have similar memories to others on our old stand. It was very atmospheric, especially the noise made by stamping feet that sounded like a plane flying low overhead. I don't think the new stand has that same atmosphere but thankfully it also doesn't stink of p*ss!

The leg room, view and facilities in the new main stand are so much better, we just need to see about getting back the North (Wing) Stand chants of old and we're sorted. Hearts fans have a stupid nickname for ER of the 'Breezeblock arena', which is really ironic because our stands are a class apart to what they have in the PBS. We now have the perfect football stadium..... just waiting for the team to match it

I'm another who was last in it for the St J. semi final. The time before that would have been the (young) Joe McBride 2-2 derby.
Our Gorgie counterparts must have awfy short legs 'cos there was just literally no legroom at all. And their numbering system is ludicrous. Instead of numbers running all the way from one end of the stand to the other, they had the same seat numbers duplicated in the different sections. Caused great confusion on the night.

Last time I was in that old death trap was in the 90s when Gordon Hunter scored the winner. Even back then I found it shocking how dilapitated it was - I had the Mrs with me and was disgusted to find that there were NO FEMALE TOLIETS in our section of the stand - had to actually escort her into a cubicle in the gents - which incidentally looked like it hadn't been decorated since 1914!

It's a dilapitated old dump which should have been demolished years ago - SHAME on Edinburgh Council for continuing to turn a blind eye to this

I have to confess my first ever match was Hearts v Third Lanark in 1963 when the old man and I sat in that very stand. Cigar smoke wafting over from the directors, Erinmore Flake pipe baccy everywhere and a silver band providing rousing entertainment pre-match and at half time.

Hearts won 2-0 and were doing well at the time but for some reason my eyes were on the scores board at half time. Kilmarnock 1 Hibs 0 it read. Laughter all round. Hibs were bottom of the league.

What madness inclined me towards the bleak wastes of Easter Road? Yesterday's papers blowing across the east terrace, Woodbines in the air and a cracked tannoy blaring out Gerry and the Pacemakers?

Must have been the white sleeves.

I remember that season The final game, i think, was at Stark's Park. Raith had been already relegated and we needed a win. 4-0 perhaps

? I was fascinated at the time with the trains passing so close by.

I was at the crumblingdome the day Killie won the title there. I had my Hibs scarf well hidden in my pocket. Used to get a liftover for free too!

Jumpers for goalposts eh, barry!

Ran onto the pitch at Tynecastle once, wearing my Hibs scarf! Mind you, it was in 1957.

It was just before kick off at friendly between the Jambos and Bolton Wanderers. I was trying to get Nat Lofthouse's autograph. When I finally arrived to the centre circle (it was further away than I'd realised) the massive, miserable bugger looked down at me and my pen and my programme and said, "Nay lad, not now. I've got a job to do."

Happily, the crowd of 11,000 maroon clad morons booed me all the way there and back!

The German Air Force in WW1 wasn't called the Luftwaffe.

Up to 1916 it was simoply called "Die Fliegertruppe des deutschen Kaiserreiches" ("Die Fliegertruppe" for short) or "Imperial German Flying Corps", and from 1916 to the end of the war it was the "Deutsche Luftstreitkraefte" - the German Air Force.

They'd have had to use Zeppelins to get to Tynie - large, smelly, unwieldy gas-bags as dangerous to friend as to foe. Rumour has it that the last remaining Zeppelin still attends Tynecastle under the pseudonym of Lord George Foulkiss the Inebriated.

As long as Lord George Foulkes remains out of Hell, HE must be the most rancid, insalubrious health-hazard on the planet.

It has to be said that the Jambos obviously treasure their insanitary, broken-down monstrosities as no other sporting body in Scotland does.

A bit off topic but when I started attending games as a nipper, early 90s, there was a family section in that stand. But am I right in thinking the away end was the Gorgie road stand rather than where we're put now?
Also would I be right in saying in the early 90s it was still all standing and we used swap ends at half time. I seem to remember my dad telling me this is the last time it would be possible before they built the new stand

Faaaar too funny, building their state of the art, advanced stand almost put them Bust. Oh the Irony, as 100 years on, it could happen again :)

From Hertz official Site:

1914: When the Stand was completed in October, it was the most advanced in Scotland, but a number of items had been omitted from the original estimate and the club's commitment began to rise just as gates began to fall due to the outbreak of the Great War.

1914: Had football been suspended during the War, Heart of Midlothian FC might not have survived because the final cost of the Main Stand soared to £12,178. Despite the initial difficulties the Stand has lasted well and has been a considerable asset to the club.

Have a bit respect.
They were away winning the war for us at the time.

Absolute disgrace of a stand, how it's deemed fit to host large crowds every other week is a real mystery. It could still lead to their downfall as it's time is running out and there's no way they'll be able to afford a new stand.

Or the upkeep alone.

Me too, I was actually wearing mine but discretely tucked in! Near the end of the game I spotted King Pat standing just in front of me, with his cousin Jimmy (Mickey) McManus. IIRC Pat had his Hibs blazer on! Pat & I shared a quiet, but very manly, hug on the way out! Of course ironically it was Alan Gordon who missed Yams best chance in the dying seconds.

Half right. We were in the Gorgie road end but there has been no swapping of ends since I started going in the mid eighties. It was a cowp then as well.

I would beg to differ.

As long as Lord George Foulkes remains out of Hell, HE must be the most rancid, insalubrious health-hazard on the planet.

It has to be said that the Jambos obviously treasure their insanitary, broken-down monstrosities as no other sporting body in Scotland does.

It's yet another reason for them to hark on about 1914, WWI and the McCrae's Battalion, so don't expect them to knock it down anytime soon.

I'm sure that there was an incident after a derby where a section of the wall surrounding the tunnel into the Gorgie Road end terracing collapsed. A couple of Hibees were slightly injured - luckily it wasn't worse.

Does a Jambo stand get just your bog standard telegram?

I'd have thought the queen would don a mustard coloured cardigan and tap out an Open Telegram to mark this occasion
