Hi guys looking for some help from fellow .netters regarding gas for the house. I have a pay as you go system and am roughly going through a fiver a day. Surely this cant be right? It seems far too expensive and is bleeding me dry. I know its winter and all that but by god thats dear. Now I have this system in the house that I dont like, basically when the temp drops the heating comes on automatically, even during the day when there is no one in. Is there away I can change the settings?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Without stating the obvious it depends on size of house etc. Wife told me ours was 396 pounds for the period so 150 pound a month at this time of year may not be too wrong. Must be a thermostat somewhere for you to change the activation point for the temperature.

Its just a 2 bedroom flat in Leith. I know people that have said they pay £25 a month for a similar sized house.

You're on a prepayment meter mate so there's your problem you're paying standard rates all the time, get onto direct debit and online billings that's where the savings are.

I work for an energy company once you are able to change tariffs etc you will save more money.

Prepayment meters are primarily for the recovery of debt and they are set to standard tarriff - or used to be. Ring the gas company and they'll either arrange for an ordinary meter to be installed or put you on a better payment plan, or both.

Is the flat rented?

The problem with that is I don't think they change the meter for free it can cost a few quid

Did you get the meter fitted or was it there when you moved in? If it was already there get your energy company to check that it's not still set to recover debt, if it is it could be that every fiver you put in has a proportion allocated to pay a debt leaving only a part of it towards your energy costs.

£45 or thereabouts I gather. Didn't cost anything at one time. In fact Scottish Gas had a programme of mass meter renewal every so often. This led to utter chaos in the Metering dept with people missing appointments and having to rebook etc. Millions of pounds were paid out in compensation to folk who had waited in vain for engineers to call.

Often gas engineers would fail to accurately take a note of the reading on the old meter and would install reconditioned meters without turning them to zero.

Don't ask how I know this. I still have to lie in a darkened room when I think about it!

Christ that's extortionate!!! I'm in a 3 bed semi in Musselburgh and we're using about £40 a month over the winter, drops to about £20 the rest of the year as it's only used for cooking and hot water. Mind you we have got a fairly new boiler which is 90 odd percent efficient. If you've got an old boiler it may only be in the 50-60% effiency range, which bumps your prices up as it has to work harder to make you're gaff warm.

Pre-payment is always more expensive too, which I never understood. Is there any way you can ask/get a meter in for monthly direct debits? That would save a fair chunk.

Edit: Scouse Hibee's suggestion is a VERY common occurance, actually happened to me a few years back, get it checked out if you haven't already :agree:

Cheers guys. I phoned them and they are changing me to a normal meter with direct debit. I never asked if there was debt on the account or meter so ill phone up and ask them about it.

I have a tiny studio flat with double glazing and I make sure I switch off my radiator and all of my sockets when I go out although it still is costing me almost £4-5 a day. I've phoned my provider and they said that everyone on the pay as you go gets charged the same depending on how much they use. Do they think I have a money tree growing in my garden or something? Sorry this is electric although i thought it was somewhat relevant

i'm approx £120/month as well for the gas meter card(just for heating), i enquired about changing it to DD instead but was told it would cost £250 to change the meter  the pre-pay meter is no longer a more expensive way of getting your gas with different payment methods nowadays, although i think it's roughly £1.40(ish) weekly for the meter

£120 seems way to much. I only pay £80 and that's for gas and electric. Have you got a big house
