why do managers pick tried and tested players in friendlys? for example ashley cole gets his 100th cap tonight when it would have been better to start leighton baines? bug bear of mine.

Because getting 100 caps is a huge milestone and he deserves it?

No doubt England are now World Beaters, shoe-ins for the Euro Championships and the World Cup having beaten a mediocre Brazil side.

if hes a starter then he should have got his 100th cap in a real qualifier and left the friendly to see how other players get on at the position no, no biggie just dont see the need to use a freindly to play veteran players who you know what they bring to the table.

I kind of see where you are coming from but do you also not think that it's best to keep a playing XI together even during friendlies?

Anyway, as you say, no biggie :greengrin

You could argue that he has with Smalling and Cleverly being in the first 11 tonight, not to mention Wilshere getting back in the England mix after injury. You can't put too many inexperienced guys in a friendly especially against the likes of Brazil because the result still matters. 2 or 3 a time in amongst veterans too see how they get on in a plausible starting competitive 11 is plenty experimentation imo.

Shouldn't this be merged with the match fixing thread?
