One look at British history would be enough to turn most would-be immigrants away. Maybe that is why this test has been introduced.

"Should I leave my oppressed life of poverty under this corrupt dictator and go to the UK? Oh no, wait, what's this? They discovered penicillin and defeated Nazism? **** that, I'm going to Spain"

More like "Should I leave my oppressed life of poverty under this corrupt dictator and go to Britain? Oh no, wait, what's this? Their head if state has housed many a dictator and murderer, they sent troops to the streets of Ireland in 1969 and killed 100,000 Kenyans in the 1950's? F*** it, Syria will do."

Oh dear.
Do you honestly think that the UK is not one of the best places in the world to live? You could highlight low points in the history of any country . Britain comes out better than most .

It's funny because it's true.

For what it's worth, British troops were sent to the streets of Ireland before 1969.

The only union flag with any credibility is one that's green and black.

...unless it suits me personally if I'm being honest!

Real life isn't about flags or nationality. It's about money and survival.

:agree: I just thought I'd highlight how British policy influenced the troubles from 1969 onwards.

The answer to your question is Yes. It probably is one of the best places to live. That doesn't negate Britain's bloody history or our head of state's acceptance of foreign dictators into Buckingham palace.

Repeating your .....joke? ....... still doesn't make it any funnier.
Anything in our history you are proud of or is it mainly bad news?

What exactly are you proud of when it comes down to "our" history?

There's been a few negative examples but not much positive stuff yet.

British empire and good stuff...3..2..1...go!

The Industrial Revolution , The Second World War , The Scottish Enlightenment. A history of exporting ideas and expertise around the works ànd leading the way in technology so many times. And despite the rabble rousing attempts of some of our press and (non-racist) right wing political parties we have managed to get along fairly well together over several decades of a multicultural society.
It is much easier to trash everything though isn't it?

Hear Hear! And the thousands crawling across Europe and clinging to the undersides of lorries to get in here are testament to that.

We've discovered a Second World?!? I must have missed this. Is that where we send the immigrants if they fail the test?!?

Look you can reply to my posts in search of an argument if you want but I usually don't reply to your babble so maybe we should just leave it at that.

If you can't answer the question don't but when you post on a forum for debate it is usual to expect your views to be challenged. If all you want is applause then say so.
I do agree that a lot of my posts are purely inane babble though................I just can't stop myself sometimes. :greengrin

George Galloway was taken to task for his comments the other day about Syria - he thinks arming the rebels is arming jihadists. He was reminded at one time he'd expressed support for Assad. He replied "Yes, there was a time when I did express support for him. It was round about the same time as the Queen was parading him down The Mall and when he was a guest at Buckingham Palace".

Touché, Gorgeous George!

:agree: I responded to the George Galloway thread on here while at University... drunk...

Anyway, I was aware of his comments on Assad - he said something on the radio (see YouTube) about a foreign conspiracy against Assad and Syria - which seems to be the same line Iranian TV channel Press TV take. (He still works for them).

I think Press TV were taken off Sky for their reporting on Syria.

Galloway did say that those who wish to see the downfall of Assad should be careful what they wish for and I think he has a point here. The people who replace Assad are unlikely to be secular liberals seeking world peace.

Is there a question on Bigotry? Maybe not, that will form part of the test to get into Scotland following independance.
