View Full Version : St Pats Branch Updates - Projects & Causes

St Pats Branch

I thought I'd give a quick update on a few items, some of which have been raised in other threads;
Founding Fathers Plaque
As you may be aware we have been working towards having a plaque to remember our Clubs Founding Fathers, namely Canon Edward Joseph Hannan and Michael Whelehan, within St Patrick's Church in the Cowgate.
We were therefore delighted to announce at our last branch meeting that approval have been granted by the church authorities and funding was in place following our successful Race Night and Donations from our membership and also some generous non members. The Plaque is being Commissioned as you read this and will be officially unveiled on March 17th 2013, St Patrick's Day, in the Church.
We'll have some of the finer details announced as we get closer to the date.

Dan McMichael’s Grave
A sad and little known fact was highlighted to us that Dan McMichael, Hibernian's longest serving Manager, who was also Treasurer, Secretary and Physio is buried in an unmarked grave in the Eastern Cemetery, behind the goals. Dan won the Scottish Cup in 1902 and the League in 1902/3. At recent branch meetings, St Pat’s Branch membership agreed that this is unacceptable and we are working towards getting suitable memorial to him.
Now that full funding is in place for the Founding Fathers Plaque, our efforts will be focussed on this branch Project and we are pleased to say progress (funding and authorisation) is well underway.

Kicks for Kids
St Pats Branch are proud to announce we have funded two 'kicks for kids (http://www.hibernianfc.co.uk/page/KicksForKids)' Season Tickets this season which we donated to the Canongate Youth Project (http://www.canongateyouthproject.org/) .
The scheme was introduced by the club to serve the needs of disadvantaged individuals from Edinburgh and surrounding areas.
Please check the 'Donations' section on our website for updates on all our Projects/Causes.

St Patricks Branch Event
Arrangement for what will be a great night in the Hibs Club , the Branch’s St. Patrick’s event, on Saturday the 16th March are well under way. The main hall is booked, the entertainment is booked and Irish stew is available if you fancy it. Tickets are available at £5 each. This event is sure to be very popular so could all wishing to attend please place their orders as soon as possible. Tickets are available to all via Committee members before and after the Hibs games in the club, or have a look at the website for more details.

Membership
Whether you are already a member or would like to become a member of our already strong, growing and vocal branch you'll probably be aware that (as per all member branches of the HSA) annual membership runs from January - January and renewal is due by end of February. You can sign up at any time but obviously NOW is the best time to get the most out of your membership especially with the exciting projects/causes mentioned above all coming to fruition.

Social Network
And finally we have created new Twitter and Facebook Pages for live updates on St Pats Branch and Hibs chat in general.

Great stuff guys and keep up the good work. The Dan McMichael situation is terribly sad but a plaque will at least acknowledge his presence so close to the club he loved

About time something was done to honour Dan. Well done. The other 'forgotten' figure who springs to mind is Owen Brannigan, who was with Hibernian in a variety of capacities from the beginning to, I think, the 1940s.

Good shout!

Owen was brought up in Abbeyhill, worked as a brass finisher and played for Hibernian from 1881 to 1888, was appointed Treasurer in 1901 and went on to become a Director until his death in 1946 - so 65 years service to the Hibernian cause

The 2 busts, Canon Hannan and Michael Whelehan, were by another supporters group (I think St. Paul's branch were involved too). Last I heard they were trying to find funds for the 2nd bust.
