Best viewing I've had all evening. Thanks Jonnyboy.
Look forward to us having a team on the park to match the quality of the stadium.

:thumbsup:Great snaps which bring back a few memories.

Striking how attractive a feature the new stadium is - compare and contrast with the fetid dungheap blighting the landscape across the city (which manages with ease the considerable achievement of actually making Gorgie look worse than it otherwise would).

Just found this site: www.britainfromabove.org.uk if you search easter road there are 2 shots from the south taken july 1949 showing the stadium with full east and no enclosure over the north terrace. For anyone interested in edinburghs former rail infrastructure one of these shots shows how the line to leith central ran behind the stadium and under hawkhill avenue- I believe there was a short lived halt here but only on the leith bound side of the tracks so it wasnt any use for bringing supporters back to waverley after the match.

Good photos those! Good to see the old Abbey & Holyrood Bowling club in the pics too.

Excellent.

The first image seems to have been taken from my regular viewing point on what was left of the old terracing.

The price of progress eh?

I think that whilst we have excellent facilities now and we used to moan like hell at the dump ER was becoming before redevelopment, that nevertheless, we lost so much of our character and have put an identikit stadium in it's place.

The new stadium is immaculate, but for me, my soul was at the old ER.

Do you know what I mean?

I'm just a wee bitty too young to remember the stadium like this ( I remember my dad taking me the long way home round the whole stadium to show me the FF and South getting built) but I've always wondered if we could've kept the stadium like this and modernised it? Done all the improvements we have now, but it was still the same actual terraces, etc. I'm sure a lot of other stadiums done that, I just wish we could've.

Yeah, you're a miserable old git

TBF, while the old stadium had become a bit of a dump, my ideal new stadium would have been a modernised version of it. So, a fancy new West Stand (as we have), new covered terracing on the East and South, and covered seated enclosure in the North; all with decent facilities, no pillars and joined at the North East and South East corners.

But maybe I'm just a miserable old git as well :greengrin

One thing I'm having problems finding is any pictures of ER before the top tier of terracing was added in the late 40's (I think). There was apparently a 'mound' at the south eastern corner which was a bit taller than the other terracing as it was then. Would be nice to see a pic if anyone has one.

Yup. I described ER as soulless in a post not too long ago; and I think it explains why my favourite game in recent times was Cowden away..

Check this out. Sometime between 1944-50. No top tier of terracing. You might have to zoom in.
