From what I can gather, this Observer journo's pal said something about transsexuals, which a few of them took exception to. Some sort of twitter argument broke out and now the Observer woman has written this piece to back up her mate:

I cannot believe the paper published this. One very hateful article.

It is very hateful but it's only her opinion. That's why I like the Guardian as they will publish things through the eyes of the writer without being heavily edited.
It will quite rightfully stir up a mini storm but if everyone had the same opinion life would be dull.
In my opinion

A lot of generalising going on within that article and negativity aimed at transsexuals in general with what began as a defence of a friend, that ended up as a piece of writing orientated around slagging off a group of people based on the writer's own prejudices.

It read pretty pathetic in my opinion. As well, I don't really see why she should be allowed to use the Guardian online to more or less 'stick up for my working class pal'.
Did I mention she came from a working class background. She seemed to make sure she pointed that out.
I've not read the offending article that kicked things off, but if all that was said was the bit about "not having the ideal body shape – that of a Brazilian transsexual", it does seem that it was all a lot of people being offended over something pretty minor. Hardly surprising nowadays though.

The paper has also published right of reply:

To my mind, people who use Twitter for their own self-publication are inviting comment - both negative and positive. The negative will sometimes be written in offensive and unacceptable language, but there are ways to deal with that.
If you're going to use those comments as an excuse to avoid discussing the real issues which you've stirred up - you shouldn't be on Twitter in the first place.

Appalling as Burchill's comments appear to be, I am not surprised.
She has always been a contrary old soul. Right from the days when she used to write for the NME, when she would (apparently deliberately) go against the accepted fashion of the day, she seems to love being on the other side.
This is par for the course for her. It wouldn't surprise me if she's sitting at home with the Hibs.net fishing-rod smiley.

Which seems to me to be a little more dignified and mature in tone than Ms Burchill's piece.
The original comment about "Brazilian transsexuals" was nasty and uncalled-for. The Twitter response to that comment may have been unpleasant, but arguments on Twitter seem to have that effect on people - Leigh Griffiths please take note. Burchill's article was intemperate, arrogant and way OTT, but then, welcome to Julie Burchill's world.
Speaking as a man of mature years and understanding, I can only assume that her state of mind had something to do with the time of the month .... :duck:

She could have used it as an opportunity to address the unacceptable abuse and vitriol that can be found on Twitter. Because you're right twitter does seem to have this twisted affect on some people But all she's succeeded in doing is to draw more attention to her and her mates' nasty intolerance.

Out of interest, did she mean that the body shape of a Brazilian transexual was ideal or not ideal? To my mind, it can be read both ways.
I'm off to do some research...
