Serious question, what would you do if your dog bit you?

I have a 2 year old Jack Russell, who I've had since he was a pup. He has bitten me twice in the space of 4 days - both times drawing blood.

I really don't know how to deal with it.

Vet first :agree:

Might be something causing him pain that you can't spot, hence the aggression.

I have a kid so if my Golden Retriever bit me (or anyone), he'd have to be rehomed, I'm afraid. If there are no kids at home, I'm sure there will be other options though.

My dog was having a few problems when we took her to the park, sort of treating it like it was her park and running up to and barking at people. Got a dog trainer out and it's all good now. I know another guy whose dog had bit his wife, they got a trainer out and that has been sorted now too.

This is the guy we got out, and he was well worth it. My missus is a vet, and her work reccomends this guy.

Bit of information here on different types of aggression:

Did he bite you for no reason? We have a 1 year old Staffie who has bitten me once when we were playing - but he knew he had done wrong. A wee telling off and he hasn' done it again.

How did you give him "a wee telling off"?

Did you kick him? Slap? Or does he understand English?

Get to the vet and if he can't find anything wrong have his nuts removed (the dog not the vet).

My dog doesn't seem to like old men with grey hair and hats. She barks and howls at them, never actually went for any of them, but doesn't act like this with anybody else. How do I get her to stop this?

I suspect she's just taking no chances. ;)

Vet. Then trainer. In that order.

Questions - is he in pain? Ill? Why hasn't he done it before, if you've had him for two years? Has something happened to set him off? Is it something YOU'RE doing that's sparked the aggression?

Then you have to settle it in his head AND YOURS that YOU're the boss and that ANY aggression towards you or anyone else is bang out of order.

You don't have t hit him or kick him to do this - the trainer will show you how to sort him out.

I have a Border Collie who has very much a mind of her own. She's never been aggressive, but we had serious obedience issues with her for a while. My late wife took her to obedience training - a local club ran classes, and over the period of a few months the problem was sorted out.

I won't claim that Lucy's a paragon of good behaviour, but she's now reasonably obedient and infinitely more biddable than she was. And I can truly say that apart from her first owners who were abominably cruel to her, she's known only kindness from humans for most of her wee life. I've never struck her with hand or foot, and neither has anyone else in the family.

But she'll still steal your supper off the plate if she gets half a chance.

Thank you all for the suggestions guys. Sorry for taking so long to reply, I was in hospital for a bit. We went to the vet who was happy nothing physical caused it. But she said sometimes when dogs get the snip it can have the opposite effect than intended. It can make them lose all confidence which shows itself in bad behaviour. He had it done 8 months ago.

So he's now seeing a trainer. Who incidently said the same about getting males neutered. She's seen a fair number of dogs who were fine til they had it done, but within 6-12 months had seperation anxiety/aggression/obedience problems etc.

I'd get a bit grumpy about it as well :greengrin

Hope everything goes well with the trainer.
