How does that work? Unless they have a cartoon devil dressed as a Hun and an angel dressed as a Hibby floating over their head.

To be honest I might get abuse for this post but I don't really care because I will explain. My mother is from Edinburgh and she was born into a catholic family. Raised catholic in her mind she is catholic. Now my farther he was born in the west. Was born into a Protestant family and raised Protestant, in his mind he is a Protestant. Well my mother is a hibs fan and my father is a rangers. Notice something here ? My parents are both separate religions and there is no hatred (obviously) we have been brought up to be Christian and we are free to have what ever faith we may want. I admit it I like rangers. But that's where it stops I dislike the religious hate the anger the abuse. Just as I hate the celtic views as well singing about the ira and what not. I dislike them as a football club because I have grew up not to like them (just as I have grew up not to like hearts) I hate hearts just as much as I hate celtic. I like hibs. But I wouldn't say I am a supporter of hibs or rangers because I do not attend games. (Plus it is hard to attend games when I live in Ayr) I like hibs more than rangers because I have in the past been to more games and jut had a better feeling supporting them rather then singing about the queen. But I like rangers for there history in football not there songs or views on other country's or views on or clubs out there. I love hibs and to an extent love rangers but as far as loyalty I it's hibs. Because I was born in Edinburgh, and by the way I'm not a glory hunter I like rangers because of my family tie with the club. That's all. I hope anyone that reads this understands why and are not quick to judge

Where is that from? The fact he tries to justify it due to his parents religious beliefs makes it utter bollocks imo.

Fair enough.

I'm sure we've all got teams we have a soft spot for and I don't think we should be dictating to anyone who it can and can't be. Having grown up in Polwarth I actually quite like Hearts

I don't see the problem with what the guy's saying.

I have a mate who's originally from the Isle of Bute. He was brought up to be a hun and both he and his dad had STs at Ibrox. He stopped going to Ibrox regularly when (1) his dad died, (2) he moved to Edinburgh to study and (3) he eventually had enough of all their bigotted nonsense - something that he never bought in to.

He started coming along to matches with me, initially for a few pints and the craic and ended up going to maybe a game a month including the odd away game.

The guy developed a huge soft spot for Hibs but the Rangers result was still the first he looked for. If you ask him who he supports he'll still say Rangers. When Hibs play Rangers he's generally not fussed either way.

The guy's not an eejit, just someone who likes his football and can think for himself.

Perfectly reasonable to support 2 teams aren't direct rivals, particularly if it's because of parents' influence.

I can't comment on the catholic v protestant thing because it's not something I grew up with but, rightly or wrongly, it obviously influences a lot of people.

Is it any worse than saying "I'm a Hibs supporter but I actually like montrose too"?

I think people are getting too caught up cause its Rangers if I am honest. Most people have two clubs they like. My grandad used to go to hibs games one week and hearts the next. Ask him now who do you support? He says and I quote "both edinburgh teams".

I think it is quite different.

Hibs aren't likely to play Montrose too often, up until recently we played Rangers 4 times a year. I just can't imagine how a Hibs supporter could walk out of a Scottish Cup Final defeat for example and not be absolutely gutted. The idea that they might be thinking 'I'm disappointed but its not all bad because Rangers won' is just totally alien to me.

That's the way it should be. Your favourite football team needn't or shouldn't be based on so called religious beliefs or origin . Fitba' is fitba' - end of story.

I think to like any other team is not a problem. I guess it goes back to the old fan v supporter thing. A supporter is if you have given money to the cause/club. Fan just means a generally willingness for the team to do well.

No one has issues when they talk about their "english team" or even their lower league team. I quite like Berwick Rangers, but if Hibs were to play them in the cup I would want (expect?) Hibs to demolish them!

My old man told me when I was seven years old that you only ever support one team. I knew what he meant when I got older. There are loads of teams I like, but they will never come close to Hibs.

I agree with this. I've tried following other teams local to where I live but ultimately the only results I care about are the Hibs ones. I'd rather watch Hibs in a meaningless friendly than the champions league final.

I recently moved house so my local team has changed from Millwall to Crystal Palace and I had no trouble changing alegencies. That would NEVER happen, or even be considered, if I moved to another city else in Scotland.

Maybe it's different if your parents support different teams, I can see how that makes sense. But for me my whole family is either Hibs or not interested in football.

First and foremost I am a Hibs supporter, ever since I was a lad from the colonies at Leith Links, I have always been a Man U fan, appreciate their history and the type of football they play, been to a few games but that's it, my heart will always be a Hibee.

I can see where the lad is coming from, parents with separate teams and religious cultures, he chose Hibs due to the fact he was born in Edinburgh but he can also appreciate Rangers due to his father, he does say he's not a supporter of them just a fan.

yeezus.

I think he's making the pertinent point that being a Rangers (or Hibs) fan doesn't have to equate to being a bigot -his case in point being his mum & dad's mixed faith marriage. Fair enough I say.

I also understand the rest of what he's saying - he's inherited a soft spot for the Gers and the Hibs from his Dad and Mum respectively, but it's notable that he states he's more comfortable at ER because of the lack of pseudo-political BS and has therefore pitched his camp with the Hibees

I've always supported hibs and man u as my dad supported them. This was from 70's when utd were sleeping giant pre SAF.

Hibs is my main team but I'm passionate about united too though I don't let on too much with most folks cause it seems a bit obvious.

Thought most folks supported a Scottish and English team but seems from this thread that's not the case?
