without googling, it has something to do with Pints and Quarts in a pub, but can't remember exactly why. Possibly to do with making sure you charged for what the patrons drank.

Mibbes aye mibbes naw. The other story is about block printing where you had to fix mirror-image letter blocks into a frame. The lower case p is the mirror-image of q and the printers frequently put the wrong one in the frame. Toilet facilities being what they were they also often had to q for a p.
