No.

Actually yes, if you watch Hibs ;)

There's also a lack of penetrating passes. How many assists have our central midfield had this season?

Play Alex Harris in there and that may change, or young Sam - their chance is surely coming.

Or, find someone who can play left wing and put Cairney in the middle.

Thank you for this post I thought it was just me. We need someone who can stamp authority on or grab a game by it's collar and boss it.

Would help if either of our central midfielders would try and get in the box once in a while. Been an issue for a few seasons, to be fair.

Paul Cairney is top of the midfield assists chart with 5 and has scored 1/2 and Spoony had assisted with 3 and scored 3. Doyle has also chipped in with 3 assists and 5 goals.

Stats from

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/stats/assists/_/league/sco.1/scottish-premier-league?cc=5739

I think the attacking side of the team is fine is the defensive side and individual mistakes that have been costing us big time.

Pat McGinlay was probably our last attacking midfielder that chipped in with quite a few goals :hmmm:

Zitelli? Zemmama? (Possibly others not beginning with z?)

the former was a striker, the latter scored 10 in 77, hardly prolific, pat gave superb service to HFC and that's FACT !! :agree: :) i'd personally take a pat McGinlay anytime over the other two mentioned :) others will disagree :greengrin

No team plays with central attacking midfielders any more. Two holding and 2 two wide players

Dean Shiels scored ten goals in season 2007-08.

McGinlay: 62 goals in 321 games = 0.19 goals per game. Zemmama's 10 in 77 = 0.13 goals per game. Granted, Pat's numbers are better, but not by much. I think the long service aspect is clouding judgement here.

And Zitelli was better in midfield. :na na:

You said Zemmama was 'hardly prolific', I would argue that my incisive arithmetic demonstrates that Pat was hardly prolific either.

That said, the fact remains that we could really use some goals from midfield...

I could see Cairney getting 7/8 goals this season. That would be in line with Mcginlays average.

Both were good players but McGinlay was the best box to box midfielder I have seen in a hibs shirt. I hate to say it but we have missed matty jack for years. I think deegan could fill that role well, as he seems to have a decent pass in him.

We have no actual width in the team, Wotherspoon always comes inside as he has zero pace to take anyone on and Cairney is wasted out on the left, far better played through the middle. Sproule is our only option and his days are long gone, we need two wide men, which would free up Cairney and Spoony to play through the middle, both with decent dribbling ability and both seem to have an eye for goal.

agree with this. would like to see cairney get a chance through the middle, but dont see us having the funds to get a left sided wide man in jan as pat really needs to get the 3 loan guys signed up

several teams play with two holding players in centre mid but they ususally have attacking full backs. Ours didn't get past the halfway line against Aberdeen.
We only have four players attacking and three off them were below par.
We can't rely on Griffiths doing it all by himself...

Taiwo came very close yesterday with a volley from 18 yards but except from that the two central midfielders done very little attacking wise... Except when Claros hit a shot 45 yards high and wide of the goal. :greengrin

And his answer would be " yes they are still a thing of the past - because it was me who scored tonight and I'm not playing in centre midfield!" :greengrin

Started off in the hole behind Griffiths ( which is def not centre midfield :greengrin), then moved out wide left later on.
