Was singing this in the house earlier and the thought hit me: "good grief, those words are just total gibberish". No idea how that's not occurred to me before, but I'm right amn't I? Any chance of any of our Ivor Novellos coming up with a re-working?

I think the words are fine. It's one of the songs that everyone knows and is sung loud so no need to change it imo!

How is it gibberish? We're just making folks aware of our presence.

Only the goals and glory line and of that we score goals, so actually its only the bit about glory and even that has happened from time to time. So maybe it's yourself who's talking gibberish.

Me and my big mouth:greengrin. I just think it stops making sense after "if you know your history". Although they've probably heard me warbling it plenty times before, I did wonder if my not-into-football neighbours were sitting there going "what is he on about?"

I think that the lyrics are fine. It's always sung loud and lets the team know that the fans are up for it.

Hail Hail!,
The Hibs are here,
All for goals and glory now,
For it's a grand old team to play for and it's a grand old team to see,
And if you know your history,
Then it's enough to make your heart go woaah,
We don't care what the animals say,
What the hell do we care,
For we only know,
If there's going to be a show,
Then the Edinburgh Hibees will be there!!

Only gibberish in the sense that it is a specifially Celtic song and has no place at ER. I have even heard it sung at Parkhead, which is embarassing to say the least.

UTTER UTTER NONSENSE!

I suppose the colour green is Celtics because they also use it!

The line of that song that for me makes it MORE a Hibs song than Celtic is "For if you know your history"

Yeah, but they were singing the song before us, and even had it on albums in the 50s and 60s.

Happy to stand corrected, but I understood it was nearer quarter to five when they first sang it. :dunno: :greengrin

It was written and sung by Glen Daly in the 50s as a Celtic anthem. You must be very young not to be aware of this fact of "history"!!

Did Hibs or Celtic sing it first?
