Some 'unbelievable' stuff doing the rounds on the internet.
This will be a massive story when the mainstream media starts to name names.
Expect some high profile politicians to be involved and don't be surprised to read of the odd suicide when the '**** hits the fan'
Our establishment is rotten to the core!

Try this for starters. I'm not sure what to believe on the net sometimes, but this looks like a proper story breaking to me. Question is will the mainstream press have the guts to pursue it and go to print?

I'd be surprised at Portillo being involved in this scandal - he's been pretty vocal in calling for an inquiry and saying that it cannot be one rule for the BBC and another for politicians/governments.

I would agree.

He seems to have been a friend/colleague of some of the "names" and, as a result, there is a smell hanging about him. If he has no part in all of this, it would suit him to have a proper investigation and have his name cleared.

But didn't call for investigations that would reveal what he was up to. Portillo may turn out to be involved, who knows?

FWIW I agree. Just find the whole thing pretty scary and sincerely hope any enquiry (unlike the last one) will hang those responsible out to dry.

The Guardian claims Lord McAlpine was not involved and is a case of mistaken identity.

Have I read too many conspiracy theories, or is it possible that some people in high places have "got at" his accuser?

I am all for "innocent until proven guilty", but I am getting to the stage where I am not sure who I should be believing.

Sir ( that's right Sir!!! ) Peter Morrison. One of Thatcher's closest political allies in the 1980s was a beast. How many others, who knew, and how deep was the cover up???

All seems a bit strange. Hard to believe that over 20 years, Stephen Messham has never seen a photo of the guy, he is accusing. He then issues an apology, even though he never named him.

It was only a matter of time after his shocking performance in front of The Commons Select Commitee. I remember saying on here at the time that his days were numbered.

It's possible but monumentally unlikely.

To be honest, I am backing off from that view now. The Observer said today that Lord McAlpine's name came up in the original enquiry, but that he was cleared of anything then. His brother's name also came up and, although it was more likely that he was involved, no action was taken against him either.

So..... given that all of this was in the public domain already, HTF did the Newsnight team miss it?

Could this complete clusterbleep be a result of what happened with the Savile investigation? Newsnight may have felt under pressure not to sit on such an explosive story and so decided to broadcast it rather than err on the side of caution.

I'm sure that will be part of their defence, but if they'd just checked the history of the McAlpine allegations....... etc etc.
