We've been involved in a few over the years :greengrin
Here's a wee run down on where some of our former opponents are and how they've fared since meeting us.
Feel free to share any memories you may have of these games
Rot Weiss Essen Germany
Essen was in Oberliga West in 1948 but champions of their national league in 1954/55. Suffered many setbacks over the years and now play in West League (4th tier) in front of an average crowd of 6,000 in the newly built Essen Stadium, which has a 20k capacity.
Djurgaardens Sweden
Based in Stockholm and has had an up and down history although currently in the top tier of Swedish football. Their current stadium holds around 14,500 and they will move to a newly built stadium in 2013. Since facing Hibs in 1955 they’ve been relegated and promoted several times and won the top tier league twice in the early 2000’s.
Stad de Reims France
After knocking HFC out in the semi final, Reims went on to lose 4-3 to Real Madrid in the final of 1956 and lost to the same opponents 2-0 in the final of 1959. In the 1980’s the club entered a long spell of lower league status but have been promoted back to the top league this season, after a 33 year absence, They play in the Stade Auguste Delaune which hold around 21,600 fans
Lausanne Sports Switzerland
Since playing Hibs in 1960 the club has won one Super League and one League B titles and is currently in the Swiss Super League. They’ve also won the Swiss Super Cup five times since 1960. Home is the Olympique de la Pontaise which holds 15,850
Barcelona Spain
No need to detail their accomplishments I guess! Camp Nou holds just shy of 100,000 and since Hibs knocked them out of the European Cup in 1961 they’ve won 13 league titles, 12 Copa del Rey’s, 10 Spanish Super Cup’s and 4 European Cup/Champion’s League’s.
Roma Italy
The Stadio Olimpico in Rome holds around 72,000 fans and Roma share it with Lazio. Hibs drew home and away with them in 1961 in the Fairs Cup semi final. 2-2 in Leith and 3-3 in Rome would put Hibs through these days but the away goals rule had yet to be invented and Roma won the playoff to eliminate Hibs. Since that meeting Roma have won Serie A once, Coppa Italia 9 times and the Fairs Cup from which they eliminated Hibs.
Belenenses Portugal
Since Hibs beat them in the Fairs Cup in 1961, the Lisbon based club has won one Portuguese Cup and one Secunda Liga. Currently in that Secunda Liga they rarely fill their Restelo Stadium which holds 29,000. Their current manager is one Mitchell van der Gaag, a Dutchman who had two seasons at Motherwell in his playing career.
Red Star Belgrade Yugoslavia
Following the break up of Yugoslavia, Red Star Belgrade are from Serbia. Red Star was and remains the best supported club in the country and their stadium in Belgrade has seen many sell-outs of its 55,538 seats. Since eliminating Hibs from the Fairs Cup in 1961, 18 league titles have been won together with 19 domestic cups and one European Cup.
Staevnet Copenhagen Sweden
This was a side created in order to face Hibs in the 1962 Fairs Cup and was made up of players from various Copenhagen clubs. Hibs knocked them out but they remained an entity for future Fairs Cup tournaments.
DOS Utrecht Holland
DOS no longer exist as in 1970, together with Velox and Elinkwijk they became FC Utrecht. Hibs eliminated DOS from the Fairs Cup in 1962 and perhaps the most notable thing about the tie was that in the home leg 16 year old Jimmy O’Rourke made his first team debut.
Valencia Spain
One of Spain’s biggest clubs they play at the Mestalla where the capacity is 55,000 but in 2013 they will move to the Nou Mestalla so as to accommodate their 50,000 season ticket holders and the 25,000 currently on the waiting list. They easily disposed of Hibs in the Fairs Cup in 1962 and since then have won 3 La Liga titles, 4 Copa Del Rey’s, 1 Spanish Super Cup, 1 European Cup Winners Cup, 1 Fairs Cup and 1 UEFA Cup. Valencia also knocked Hibs out of the Fairs Cup in 1965.
Porto Portugal
The 1967 Fairs Cup brought Porto to Easter Road as Portuguese Cup holders but they were put to the sword by the Hibees. Since then, Porto has won a staggering 21 Primeira League titles, 13 Portuguese Cups, 19 Portuguese Super Cups, 2 European Cups/Champions Leagues and 2 UEFA Cups/Europa Leagues meaning that their Estadio do Dragao rarely has any empty seats amongst the 50,000 available.
Napoli Italy
Led Hibs 4-1 from the first leg of the 1967 Fairs Cup in Italy but famously dumped out of the tournament by a stunning 5-0 Hibs win in Leith. In 2004 Napoli went bankrupt and was demoted to the third division but they have fought their way back to the top table again and often fill their 60,000 Stadio San Paulo. Amongst those famous to have played for Napoli prior to their bankruptcy was Maradona whose number 19 shirt was retired when the Argentine left the club.
Leeds United England
Leeds faced Hibs in the 1967/68 Fairs Cup, scraped past them after two very close matches and then went on to lift the trophy. The Yorkshire side was very successful under manager Don Revie but in more recent times has struggled in trying to get back into the top tier of English football. Since facing Hibs they have won 3 First Division titles, 1 Second Division, 1 FA Cup, 1 League Cup and 2 UEFA Cups.
The clubs met again in 1973/74 with the same outcome.
Olympia Ljubljana Yugoslavia
The original club went bankrupt in 2005 and was dissolved with the new Slovenian club of the same name rising from the ashes. The club that Hibs faced and beat in 1968 won few honours prior to its demise.
Lokomotiv Leipzig Germany
Started life as SC Leipzig but was rebranded in 1963 as Lolkomotiv Leipzig of East Germany. Domestic honours were rare but the club surprised everyone by reaching the final of the 1987 Cup Winners Cup. They lost 1-0 to Ajax in that final. Following the reunification of Germany, Lokomotiv finished third in the 1992/93 Bundesliga but the following season they were relegated and have never returned to the top flight.
Hamburg Germany
One of Germany’s oldest clubs it can boast that it has never been relegated from the top flight in the whole of its existence since forming in 1887. Since facing Hibs in 1968/69 the club has won 3 league titles, 2 German Cups and 2 German League Cups, 1 European Cup, 1 Cup Winners Cup and 2 Inter Toto cups.
Malmo Sweden
Probably Sweden’s most successful club in terms of honours won, they lost out to Hibs in the 1970/71 Fairs Cup. Since then they’ve won 11 league titles and 8 Swedish cups. They reached the 1979 European Cup Final but lost 1-0 to Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest. England’s Roy Hodgson once managed them and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Jan Moller and Jari Litmanen once wore their colours
