The debate should be about getting rid of ******ed cops and/or providing better training. The taser on its own does nothing.

The ones who're doing their job properly need the tools do deal with this sort of thing: "A man carrying a samurai sword was later arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly."

I saw this story earlier and found myself chuckling at it, not for the poor blind guy that got tasered, but the sheer stupidity of a copper who mistook a white cane for a samurai sword. I mean WTF

Surely he will get a few quid out of it if he gets in touch with one of the multitude of claims firms currently advertising their services.

Yup. There are clear rules covering the use of tasers. The policeman should have clearly identified himself as police, for a start. Nor should he have been so quick on the trigger - a taser has plenty of range to stop someone with a sword long before he gets to you.

There was a genuine threat in Chorley that needed to be dealt with. A taser's a fine and handy thing to deal quickly and safely with a disorderly, potentially violent drunk with a sword.

But an elderly blind man walking slowly down the street feeling his way with his white cane? How does he translate into a hooligan with a samurai sword? The man's had two strokes - they could have killed him or left him permanently paralysed.

I think we are being a bit harsh on the unfortunate officer who discharged his taser in good faith. Surely many of us have mistaken an elderely frail blind man wielding a white stick for a Samauri sword marauding hooligan in the past.
