Is that Eoin Doyle in the hibs subs? Caldwell and Handling on international duty? Also no Taiwo/Kuqi in there for their fitness. This U20 business confuses me!

Agree thought that would have been an ideal chance to get their match fitness up however maybe there has been a bounce friendly organised for this week which they are due to play in.

Be interesting to see how the U20's cope with Magennis given the way he got stuck into our 1st 11 in the recent game.

Magennis is the difference here. He reads the line well, is strong and brings players into the game with his hold up play

Few points on the U20s league this year:

Quite an interesting one. I heard that James has now played somewhere between 25 and 30 different players so far in the U20 games we have played in this year. Thats a hell of a lot of players. Obviously not much opportunity for the younger guys to be playing consitently week in week out. Might be wrong but sure thats the figure i was told on Saturday (26 to be exact i think).

Whats folks thoughts on that?

1. Hibs have loaned out four of their younger players since the start of the season (Booth, Smith, Antell, Forster).

2. The league is now something of a hybrid youth / reserve league now, so clubs are using it to give players returning from injury a game and so on. Therefore you're going to get a much bigger churn rate than if it was just an under-20s only league.

I understand that. Just trying to gauge peoples thoughts on whether they think this is a good thing or a bad thing?

I think it is a good thing in that younger players may benefit from playing alongside more experienced players e.g Kuqi with Caldwell/Handling however as you suggest these experienced players may limit some of the game time of the younger ones. Nothing stopping the club organising other bounce games also. In saying that PF seems to be utilising the young players into the first team squad and also giving them a chance such as Caldwell, Handling and Harris for a short time on Saturday.

I see the pro's and cons however a bit concerned that the lads don't get to develop as a squad, play week in week out and potentially go and challenge for the league/scottish cup which at their age they should be turning their attention to. However in saying that we havn't brought many through the ranks in recent years so suppose it could go either way.....:aok: Still i'm sure James would rather be playing the young lads and letting the older first teamers play in the bounce games which you mention.

I hear what you are saying however to me while challenging for trophies at that level is good I would say that the main objective is to continue the development of the players so that they can be pushing into the first team squad.

Again i totally agree with you, however at that age 17,18s, 19s, 20s i think we need to instill a winning mentality as well as continue to develop the players. Its getting the mix of both which in recent years from the outside it appears we have managed well. I just worry that the the amount of first team players playing in these U20 games could have a detrimental effect due to the number of changes enforced upon the group.

It is definitely the art of getting the balance right that is for sure you want them to have a winning mentality and be battle hardened to an extent however to me results at that level are of lesser importance than bringing through 2 or 3 gems who can enhance the first team and the club over the longer term usually in transfer fees.

Just to clarify i am in no way interested in results at kids/youth level and completely in the developmental mindset. Just wanted to clear that up in case haha :greengrin Sure everything we have covered will operate along the lines of the clubs philosophy anyway, just an interesting situation that has arisen from this U20s league.

Was there today and the team played some nice stuff ..... the difference was Maguennis ..... but again a good learning experience for the defence for their development .

As an aside, Campanille who was on the bench for the Dons comes from Leith and is only 16. One I'll be keeping an eye on. Football daft according to his parents who as far as I'm aware have no interest in football whatsoever!
