View Full Version : The Tory apologist says sorry (Aototuned).

What a coincidence.
So, Nick Clegg, under pressure from his own party for breaking his own party's manifesto promises, apologises after 2 years for doing so, on the eve of his own party's conference.
Except, he's not really apologising for breaking his promise, but for making the promise in the first place.
A genuinely humble gesture of a contrite politician, or a cynical ploy to hang on at all costs to his Tory puppet status?
You decide.

A strange decision to partially apologise now. The beard and sandals wing of the Liberals wont buy it and theyll still hate him, the public will never trust him again, his constituents in Sheffield will still hate him, and his cabinet colleagues (there are now 31members of the cabinet, a ludicrous number, i thought the Tories wanted SMALL government?) will continue to hate him.
But he's really not a very good politician, found out at the highest level. Probably not helped by not having a proper job. A Deputy PM really doesnt do anything and isnt supposed to.

He's a very sad sack of a person. Nothing more than a giant prophylactic for the Tories, though he was basically always one of them anyway. His sanctimony was transparently revolting throughout the election campaign and was superceded only by his manifest lack of any substantive policy, complete separation from any political moorings and total devotion to doing nothing other than park his backside on the seat of a Ministerial car.
I don't know whether to loathe him for his utterly false and shallow 'politics' or to go down on bended knee and thank him for destroying the Liberal-Democrats. A party so narrowly attuned to the self-serving interests of the upper middle class as to make the Tories blush and decent human beings repulsed.
He deserves to end up finding his true level. Somewhere between dog warden and park attendant. Then he could focus on the dog 5hit that he and his party have spent the last 30 years 'campaigning' on.
yeezus.

Although I think there is a level of maturity to what he is saying, he's just trying to win over annoyed Lib Dems.
PR stunt, the man is a liar with the backbone of a slug.

Most politicians are patronising gits, who take the electorate for mugs but Clegg is at the top of the pile. Any time I hear him speak to us like children it sends me loopy.

Tory minister Andrew Mitchell trying to leave Downing Street talking to the police: “Open this gate, I’m the Chief Whip. I’m telling you — I’m the Chief Whip and I’m coming through these gates.
Best you learn your fu**ing place. You don’t run this fu**ing government. You’re fu**ing plebs.”

These are almost all minor things, vague platitudes ( What does this actually mean: "Met a manifesto pledge to extend the right to flexible working for parents) or things which the tories would have done anyway. That website really doesn't convince me.

Clegg may just have pulled it off. Compare that to the odious Mitchell.
He must now make a speech in similar honest vein at his party's Conf.
The YouTube thing plays in his favour. Kids love that sort of stuff.

Clegg is a victim of his own success. Making expensive pledges like that in a time of austerity can only be done if you don't expect yourself to get into government.
Mitchell on the other hand has to go. His comments would be out of order at any time, let alone in the immediate aftermath of two police officers being murdered.

Isn't Clegg the one who's led the LibDems to a major reduction in party membership? So much so that you could get all the members into Celtic Park and still have room to accommodate the Green Brigade, the guys with the Celtc banner and a hundred coach loads of folk supporting their local team.
The LibDems sold their soul to the devil by entering the coalition but hey it's understandable as it's the only way they'd ever get within a million miles of being in power.

This completely.
He is a living embodiment of the case against proportional representation. These principal-devoid political vampires would be automatically advanced to the heart of every future government forever for no reason other than their capacity to hold the balance of power with a handful of seats. I don't know what's worse, their fake moralising or their odiously smug self satisfaction.
I hope his planetary sized vanity continues to immolate the Lib-Dems to the point where they disappear up their own electoral jacksies forever.
He is a coherent and sincere Deputy Prime Minister like the News of the World was a decent, upstanding and factual newspaper.

It pains me but you are pretty much right. He is to politics what hearts are to complete football. A ****ing disgrace

Their success was getting into government, not what they've done in government. The former isn't something that they've had to think seriously about at UK level in decades and for the latter a generous assessment of the coalition would be that it's directionless and clueless.

Amazing to hear on BBC Radio Five Live tonight the story of the lad who was sent to prison for swearing at a police officer.
I'm assuming the same thing will happen to ex private schoolboy, Oxbridge student and Tory chief whip Andrew Mitchell?
We're all in it together, aren't we?

While you've got a point about the inconsistency of the way the law is applied, what's the relevance of Mitchell's school or university?
Hibbyradge

The relevance is that, in the same way as rugby fans' misbehavior is treated differently to that of football fans, his background will ensure that he won't face charges, never mind jail time.

Anecdotal experience suggests that the overwhelming majority of state-educated people who swear at police aren't lifted, charged or jailed either.
I've no issue with the fact that his job may mean that he's treated leniently but it's got nothing to do with his parents' choice of school for him.

Reports today that Mitchell has now admitted swearing at police whereas before (I think) this was denied. 'pleb' is still up for debate though....

It can't be a fact, it it "may mean..."
...it's got nothing to do with his parents' choice of school for him.
In my opinion, it has.
Also, it's a fact that his schooling may mean he's treated leniently.
