Seem to remember a lot of comments around the time it happened. Never see him on Sky or hear him on TalkRadio now. Co-incidence?

SCOTTISH police have raided the home of a retired English Premiership referee after allegations that anti-Catholic remarks were posted on his personal website following an Old Firm game.
• Ex-referee Jeff Winter’s home searched after allegations that anti-Catholic messages were posted on his website
• Mr Winter retired from refereeing in English Premier League in 2004

Jeff Winter’s Middlesbrough home was searched under warrant on Tuesday morning, and equipment was seized from the premises, police said today.

It is alleged that Mr Winter posted anti-Catholic comments on his website following a match between Rangers and Celtic last December.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said today: “At around 8am on Tuesday, September 11, officers from the National Football Co-ordination Unit searched a property in Middlesbrough under warrant and seized various items of equipment.

“This is part of an ongoing inquiry in connection with alleged offensive comments posted on a website. A further operation on Tuesday resulted in a man being detained and subsequently released in London in connection with the incident. Enquiries are continuing.”

One of the posts, dated December 20, 2011, described Pope Benedict XVI as a “dress wearing, Nazi, kiddy fiddling protector.”

Another post, published two days prior, asked whether “altar boys” would be “abused in celebration” following Celtic’s victory.

The man who was detained by Strathclyde Police officers investigating the comments that appeared on Mr Winter’s blog is not believed to be the former referee.

Mr Winter describes himself as a Rangers fan on his Twitter page and posted a message on the social networking site at the end of last month claiming he was on holiday abroad until September 18.

The former Premiership referee, who retired in 2004, denied any knowledge of the posts in an interview with County Durham newspaper the Northern Echo.
