The thread on the main forum regarding Tom Cruise's casting got me thinking about the upcoming Jack Reacher movie based on the book One Shot. This had the potential to be a great film but for all of us who love the books I can't get over how disappointed I was that they cast Cruise to play the part of Reacher.
In every book Lee Child explains that Reacher is a beast of a man on more than one occasion so why did he sell out to Hollywood and agree to cast Cruise when there would be much better options out there to play the role. I might get shot down for saying this but I reckon Vince Vaughan would have been great in he role!

I am gutted they picked Tom Cruise as Reacher, utter nonsense. I reckon Liam Neeson or Idris Elba(I know Reacher isn't black, but Elba is built like I imagine Reacher)

I was at the book festival a couple of weeks ago at the session with Christopher Brookemyre and Mark Billingham. This point came up and, according to Bellingham, when Childs was asked about this his reply was that Teacher's height and build was a metaphor!

He has said that a couple of times in interviews I have read, begs the question though, if i was just a metaphor, why does he need to repeat the fact time and time again through out all the books. Im sure it was mentioned twice in the first 3 chapters of the latest book.
GlesgaeHibby, I reckon Liam Neeson would be a bit old but cracking shout for Idris Elba.

It's not even just Tom Cruise height, it's how he speaks as well. He doesn't sound like I imagine Reacher would sound.
I love the Reacher books but I'm not sure I'll watch the film.

All I can say is they must be paying Lee Childs a lot of money to get him to bend over and take it re Cruise. Total joke and a sell out of massive proportion

Money talks, John. And Cruise and his business partner Paula Wagner are producers - which is obviously why Cruise got the part.
IIRC, in the books, Reacher's 6' 5" tall, weighs 250 pounds and is built like a brick ****-house, and blond with blue eyes. Cruise is 5' 7", about half the weight, dark-haired and brown-eyed. So all he needs is a box to stand on, a fat-suit, coloured contacts and a wig. And an audience who've never read the books on account of their all being stone-blind.
http://www.toptenz.net/top-10-miscast-movie-roles.php - personally, I would nominate Richard Chamberlain playing the Rev Harry Powell in the excruciatingly awful remake of Charles Laughton's majestic classic "Night of the Hunter"; Tony Curtis in "The Vikings"; John Wayne as Genghiz Khan in "The Conquerors"; and George Clooney as Batman as right up there with the worst.
Personally I find Geraldine McEwan absolutely dreadful as Miss Marple - Joan Hickson was perfect for the role - and Disney's plans to cast Jennifer Garner in the role leads me to assume that they're doing the stories as slapstick comedies.
And here is and ever will be one Bond - and one Bond only, please, Vasily  - so Lazenby, Moore, Dalton, Brosnan and Craig are ALL miscast. :greengrin

There was chat about this couple of years back as to who should play Jack Reacher, I
always thought Dominic Purcell who played one of the brothers, Lincoln Burrows in
Prison Break ticked most of the boxes for me,Tom Cruise nope not even close!

Indeed. In fact Tom Cruise might have to stand on said box to get anywhere close to Lee Child's character :greengrin
