Today (19 Aug) marks the 26th anniversary of a glorious game, which ended with me deciding "right, from here on in Montrose will be my second team"

Not many seem aware that on 19-8-1986, Hearts took to the field at Tynecastle in front of a tiny crowd against lowly Montrose in the League Cup.

The jambos 2 previous competitive games had been vs Dundee (2-0 defeat, scorer Kidd x2) and Aberdeen at Hampden in the Scottish Cup.

While those 2 games are well-recorded here, not many know that Hearts completed their own shameful treble by tumbling out of 3 competitions in just 3 games by losing 2-0 at home to the mighty Gable Endies of Montrose!!

Match report here : http://www.londonhearts.com/scores/games/198608191.html

I was in the Montrose area this weekend so I headed into the town to see it - and was delighted to note that the "Welcome to Montrose" sign is resplendant in colours Green & White. Get in!

So, 26 years on, that's why the Gable Endies are my second team, for their unsung role in the Jambos pitiful summer of 86.

For what it's worth, the week before Hibs beat Souness's Rangers 2-1 at Easter Road. Good times (may they return soon!)

GGTTH (and the Gables Endies!)

I think it was earlier. IIRC in 75-76 we played Montrose in a two leg League Cup tie and Liverpool over two legs in the Fairs Cup. Against both opponents we won 1-0 at home and lost 3-1 away. Montrose were as good as Liverpool in those days.

Wasn't there a game where Montrose beat us 1-0? Barr (?) was the scorer?

Doesn't matter if they beat us, this is a Hearts bashing, Montrose appreciation thread. **** THE HEARTS!

I've copied that from a Montrose site. They put Hibs and Hearts out of the league cup in different seasons. Les Barr was their star right back at the time, and he had a spell with Dundee when they still were the big team in that city. A worthy follower to Albert Kidd.

Fair enough, I was a bit off the mark. Father time isn't kind to the memory :)

Everyone's beaten us in the cup, can't blame Montrose for taking their turn:rolleyes:
For those that remember, it did make for a fine start to the new season after the joy of the previous one's ending.

Was the away game not the one where the pie stall went on fire, and Pat Stanton got blamed by ET for us losing?
