Any suggestions apart from Durham?

Robin Hood's Bay. Nice little picturesque town with a great piece of coastline for walks. Quite romantic if you're taking the Mrs.

Harrogate? Maybe farther South than you wanted but it's an old Victorian Spa town.
Hand if you fancy the races with Thirsk, Ripon & Wetherby nearby.
In the town itself is an old 'Turkish Baths' that's been refurbished in recent times with all the old features restored to their original glory.
Depends who you go with, but Harrogate can make for a right durty weekend!

Harrogate is a good call. Really nice place. Cup of teas are expensive though.

York or Harrogate; lovely places.
What about Northumbria, somewhere on the coast?

Haggerston Castle
Seriously Harrogate is nice but the pubs are all either All Bar One/Wetherspoons or overpriced wine bars. Alnwick's ok, you've got Lindisfarne & Bamburgh Castle near. Nice beaches if you head for the coast, weather permitting...

Beadnell is popular but a nice enough village, handy for Alnwick, Bamburgh and Holy Island, with a couple of decent pubs for food and a pint from memory.

I took your advice and tried to book an hotel in Beadnell, but there were no rooms available.
Instead we went to Bamburgh and we all loved it. (Mrs R and the in-laws).
The beach is fantastic and the castle is very impressive. We went across to Holy Island, (first time I'd done that for about 35 years) and the whole weekend was lovely.
The restaurants were good although the one I particularly wanted to try, The Mizen Head, was fully booked.
Even the weather was kind: it stayed dry and we actually saw sunshine on the Sunday!
We'll definitely be using it as a regular getaway venue in future.
Thanks for the tip.

Another vote for York.
My personal favourite is Helmsley which is north of York. Beautiful little town. There are lots of beautiful little towns but Helmsley is where I went on summer holidays a lot when I was younger. It's not as nice as it was then (unless that's just my clouded memory) but I love it and visit whenever I can.

I've been to York hundreds of times. Worked there and played there.
It's lovely, but it's a bit "old hat" for me now.
I'll go back, of course, possibly quite soon, if for no other reason than to see how high the recent floods got to in the King's Arms!
