They dubbed him the King of Swing. Exactly 40 years ago this week, Bob Massie, medium pace bowler from Subico, Perth, Western Australia, and adopted son of Kilmarnock, etched his name into the record books with one of Test cricket’s great bowling feats. At Lord’s, in tandem with Dennis Lillee, debutant Massie’s explosive late swerve, mostly from around the wicket in a humid atmosphere and under cloudy skies, bemused the English batsmen into submission. His return of 16 for 137 has been bettered in Tests on only three occasions. This was the same seam bowler Northants had rejected after two insipid trials.
