View Full Version : Hibernian FC Dream Team

Macaroon
03-05-2012, 10:25 PM
Goalkeepers have been selected! Results are above.

Andy Goram makes the starting XI with Jim Leighton in the subbies.

As this wonderful (most of the time :cb) board has users spanning across multiple generations of Hibernian history it would be great fun to see what everyone's dream team would be. Including the eleven best players you can remember being at this club. It would be great if we all came together to decide on one community dream squad for the whole of hibs.net.

Here's how it will work:

I will edit this post to include a Poll for the community's Dream XI Goalkeeper, with a number of nominations through you folk! I'll open the poll and then the two winners of the poll after 1 day will go into the squad.

I'll then go in and edit the poll to Central defenders, and this will repeat for each position on the pitch, namely:

Goalkeeper - 2 Winners
Central Defenders -3 Winners
Wide Defenders - 3 Winners
Central Midfielders - 4 Winners
Wide Midfielders -3 Winners
Strikers - 3 Winners

After a few days we will have an 18 man squad of the Hibs.net Community dream team! Sounds good eh
:aok:

A couple of quick rules to keep it run smoothly!

You may only vote for a player if you saw him play in the flesh in the green and white. This gives a better overall picture of the whole community rather than who you "just know was the best"
Poll's for a player's position will be open for roughly 24 hours before results are taken. (Time scale open for change if too long)
I will post a message in the thread asking for peoples nominations for a position. There will be no more than 10 nominees for each position.

Currently taking nominations for Central Defenders, just post who you think should be in it :aok:

You may also want to post your own personal dream team from what you've witnessed as a Hibernian fan. As I am young my team will be both limited and possibly controversial in that I may have grossly misjudged some of the earlier players! Regardelss, here's mine:

Nick Colgan

Whittaker - McPake - Caldwell (Despite being an arse) - D Murphy

Beuzelin - S. Brown - K. Thomson

Shiels

Riordan - O'Connor

I reckon that side could easily split the old firm now-adays. If only!

Why include Colgan as Goalkeeper yet exclude Franck Sauzee and Russell Latapy? No Mixu, no John O'Neil, no Kenny Miller.

That is before we start looking at earlier generations such as Keith Wright, Darren Jackson, Gordon Hunter, Jim Leighton, Micheal O'Neill, Kevin McAllister, etc.

Simon ****ing Brown?!?!?!

I knew he would be a controversial choice!

He was the one responsible for that near post cock-up vs Hearts am I right? At that time I still judged player's abilities on whether I liked them or not. And something about Brown appealed to me!

But Tam wouldn't make my bench.:greengrin

He only made mine because I seem to remember him working his ar*e off every time he played. It was a straight up fight between McManus, Steven Fletcher or Paco Luna for that last spot on the subs bench as a striker. I'm limited to what I have seen and made an impression on me when I was younger ie Division 1 season onwards. Gah it is just too hard, I'm glad my first 11 is great. Which striker would you have replaced Tam with out of interest?

If you were wanting an extra body in there for strength surely you should have gone for 'The Tank', Eduardo Hurtado. He weighed the same as Bobby Williamson. We should do a terrible Hibs team, like a Nightmare team and see what horrors we can unearth! A few names instantly spring to mind...

Would be good to have 4 polls running, 1 for GK, 1 for DEF, 1 for MID, and 1 for ATT, 10 players on each, highest 4 get put into the dream team, you'd get a fairly accurate picture of what the messageboard seen as the dream team, for me, I'm 29 and only really started following football when I was around 10.

Mines is below, hardest part was choosing between Jackson and Keith Keith Keith.

GK - Leighton

Def - Murph
Def - Sauzee
Def - Jones
Def - Whit

Mid - McGinlay
Mid - Latapy
Mid - Boozy
Mid - Brown

Att - Keith Keith Keith
Att - Riordan

Sub GK - Andersson
Sub Def - Miller
Sub Mid - Murray/Jack

When Le God arrived he played in a deep midfield role but McLeish switched to a back three our second season after proomotion and dropped Franck to sweeper and he played alongside Paul Fenwick and Gary Smith, it is one of the best defensive seasons I can remember. We also had De La Cruz at right wingback & Ulrik Laursen at left wingback.

Okay, Nominations for Dream Goalkeeper anyone?

I think we'll take about 5 or 6 for this position.

Fire away!

For me in my time it has to be Goram. Best keeper I ever saw at any team. Closely followed by Leighton, then Roughie. All three had a huge hand in keeping us in the top league at one time or another.

Just approaching middle age at 57 I'm spoilt for choice :greengrin so will give a few candidates for each position (I missed out on the McLeish era so didn't see Sauzee, Latapy etc play so going by the rules I've excluded them from my list)

Goalkeepers: Goram, Leighton, Rough, Ronnie Simpson

Right Backs: Brownlie, John Fraser

Left Backs: John Parke, Erich Schaedler, Joe Davis

Right Half: Pat Stanton, Des Bremner

Centre Half: John McNamee, John Madsen, Jim Easton

Left Half: John Blackley, Jackie McNamara, John Baxter

Outside Right: Alex Edwards, Peter Marinello, Jim Scott

Inside Right: Willie Hamilton, Peter Cormack, Jimmy O'Rourke, Ralph Callachan

Centre Forward: Joe Baker, Joe McBride Snr, Alan Gordon, Colin Stein

Inside Left: Neil Martin, John Collins, Alex Cropley

Outside Left: Eric Stevenson, Arthur Duncan

Well, sir, you've certainly simplified the process for yours truly.

1. Andy Goram
2. John Brownlie
3. Erich Schaedler
4. Pat Stanton
5. John McNamee
6. John Blackley
7. Peter Marinello
8. Jimmy O'Rourke
9. Joe Baker
10. Alex Cropley
11. Arthur Duncan

I did see the McLeish team, so my bench would be Leighton, Bremner, Sauzee, Willie Hamilton, Edwards, Gordon and Collins.

The manager would be Willie McFarlane. Mr Motivator would be Mad Tam McNiven of the icy sponge and ammonia bottle.

I'm humbled to realise how many truly great players I've seen in Hibs colours, and more than a little miffed at how little successive boards have made of such a fount of exceptional talent.

He is a despicable Hun nowadays but if we were precluding players for leaving us and playing for other teams we would struggle to get a greatest ever team. Goram was by far the best keeper I have ever seen. He stopped us from one absolute doing at Tynie in one game, we still lost but it could have been 7 or 8. Even the mutants at the far end from us chanted his name at one point!!!!

:agree: I remember that game - and I lost count of the number of times he was the one single reason we won or drew simply because he kept a clean sheet against the odds. To be fair to him, I do think he has problems not of his own making. Hibs aren't exactly short of great keepers in their history, though - Younger, Rough and Leighton were all very fine keepers who played for Scotland in their time. There's Ronnie Simpson too.

Was out for a pint with another member of the ' Hibs Old Farts Club ' today and would you believe he posed exactly the same question having read my post !!!
The cost is incaluable but also what would you have to pay now in wages to keep them at ER ?
In 1951 aged 19 when I played against the F 5 at the "Hallowed Ground" I was making £3.7.6d a week as a part timer ( I was an apprentice ) plus 10 shillings a point . If we won I got £ 4.7.6d . To put it in perspective my journeyman was paid £5.2.6d for a forty two hour week ! My pal was with East Fife , full time , in the same season and was paid £7.15.6d plus 10 shillings a week !!!!
And we thought we were well off !!!!!!!:greengrin
Back to the topic
Well nigh impossible to compare players from the 1950's with those playing in 2012 . The game is completely different in every way .
Is it any better entertainment wise ? Well I plead the fifth amendment :greengrin

It is rapidly becoming clear that there's no such thing as a Hibernian Dream Team". There's MY Dream Team, YOUR Dream Team, and everyone else's Dream Team. But within the terms of the original post (we have to have seen our nominees actually playing for Hibs) the voting's bound to be heavily weighted in favour of players from the last 10-15 years, and with all due respect to the players of that era and the supporters whose experience is limited to that era - the last 15 years are far from being the pinnacle of Hibs' history as a football club.

:agree: That's what I mean - there's your team and my team, and who we each choose depends on when we were watching Hibs and who our favourites were and even on which particular games stick out in our memories.

I mean, Dino Zoff was a great Italian keeper and World Cup winner, but the only time I saw him in the flesh he shipped five at ER!

On that one game he wasn't very good at all ... :greengrin

However, it will be very interesting to see what the final team turns out to be - we seem to be selecting a top-class keeper, for a start.

Okay, so here's what I'll do. Am I right in saying that you can edit a poll once it has been posted?

If that is the case then I will edit the OP to include a Poll for the community's Dream XI Goalkeeper, with a number of nominations through you folk! I'll open the poll and then the two winners of the poll after say 1 day will go into the squad.

I'll then go in and edit the poll to Central defenders, and this will repeat for each position on the pitch, namely:

Goalkeeper - 2 Winners
Central Defenders -3 Winners
Wide Defenders - 3 Winners
Central Midfielders - 4 Winners
Wide Midfielders -3 Winners
Strikers - 3 Winners

After a few days we will have an 18 man squad of the Hibs.net Community dream team! Sounds good eh :aok:

Any other thoughts people have about how it should be run?

I think the rules have to be relaxed to allow votes for anyone, otherwise there is a real danger that the likes of Stanton, Baker and the Famous Five miss out simply because most of us are too young to have seen them play. We're not all as lucky as you, Doddie!

John Blackley & Rob Jones becasue of how well he did in a comparitively poor side then Gordon Hunter - I seen Jim Black about the same amount of times as Blackley and I leave him out with a heavy heart but for that reason no hesitation in saying if he's not in nae chance Yogi (great leader on the pitch in his shorter time with us) or Caldwell in comparison.

Willie used to run out on the park and his shirt was black with sweat before the game kicked off. After a game at Falkirk we had gone for a chippie before getting a train back to Edinburgh and the team bus pulled up and Willie got off and when the bus moved off he was straight into the nearest pub. Never mind taking the yams apart he took Real Madrid apart along side Pat Quinn. I also remember him sending three Dundee players the wrong way without touching the ball , just a swivel of his hips. Memories , its' all coming back or is it just the drink.

Can see where you are coming from - I am trying, and failing, to say that I have a job including many of the more modern day players mentioned because of the earlier generations I was able to see by virtue of my age!

Using the early to mid 70's sides as my benchmark few of the modern day players I have seen could be part of my dream team in this position in comparison but recognising times have changed I have included a few.

Am not comparing Blackley, Jones, Rae or Hunter for the purposes of this thread, would include them all in a poll in this order ahead of others.

This is getting complicated............:greengrin

Isn't it just! Why don't we wait to see what the poll brings back

Which brings us back to the problem I stated late on in page 4... I don't want to have to start a new thread for every poll!

I used to worship folk like rough, hunter, rae, cowan, bell, sneddon, etc but was too young to know how good/bad they really were! Was also tempted to put tortolano in, he is a legend of sorts!!!

Anyone know how we will get the whole poll thing working? Will a mod/admin help out or will we need to start a new thread for each position?

If we win the SC, this current squad will be my dream team!!!

They will have achieved more than any other in living memory.

I need some opinions!!

Should I start a new thread for each position? As it isn't currently possible to edit an existing poll within this thread? Can a mod help if asked? Can't continue with the whole thing until I know?
