Great read. Let's hope he's celebrating a famous victory. By the way, he looks good for 102 - even has a full head of hair! He must be the only person who can say watching Hibs has kept him looking young :greengrin

Sammy is a good friend of mine and a lovely man too.
We traveled on Maude's bus to Montrose and i remember going out looking for him and his friend?

Years later i met his son, he asked me straight away about his dad having to walk home from Montrose and if it was true?

Sammy had repeatedly told his family this story and they didnt know if it were true or not. I confirmed it all to him and he went off to phone his brothers and sisters to tell them it was true.

A true gentleman in every way, always smiling and still going strong today.

Hope the Hibees do it for you Sam. xx

My Dad who's 89 will once again be at Hampden in May 19th in anticipation of a historic Hibs win! :agree:

SOL after the 2007 CIS Cup win reduced him to tears and I'm sure a win against our arch enemies will do the same but, as with 2007, for the right Hibs reasons!

I remember Sammy well, lovely man & great to know he's still going strong! Unfortunately I also remember the Montrose game!! A wed night, blowing a gale & we lost to a 70 yard goal, a clearance that took one bounce & flew in! Think it was a guy called Les Barr! Think Sammy's story has grown a few legs over the years, from memory, he slept the night in a shelter & got a lift home in a lorry the next day! Regardless, great story!

Lovely story this one. Would be a nice touch if the board could treat this gentleman as a VIP on Cup final day by arranging travel and a seat in hospitality.
Come on - let's get Sammy to Hampden (if he's able, of course).

Hearts have got a campaign going to get a ticket for the baldy **** from masterchef a ticket. Surely we can do the same for our oldest fan.

And this distinguishes the two fan bases.
In the green corner, a campaign for a true Hibs stalwart to attend an event where tickets are at a premium.
In the maroon corner they would rather a spammy-heided nonentity who specialises in puddings be given a ticket than a proper Hearts man/woman. Says it all really.

Class does not show on a maroon jersey.

I remember Sammy well from the Hawkhill bus. He used to sit with auld Willie Young and a collection of other oldies who are probably long gone now. Maude loved him. He had an exotic charm about him as he never lost his dialect. it was like listening to an auld Bob Marley....
Cannot believe he has reached 102 but I think his faculties might be slipping if he can remember us beating Juventus!
He was a lovely old gent then (he would be in his sixties!) and it sounds like he still is.Thank **** for the Hibs.

That's my recollection too HH although I have to tell you that when I was in his company in London for an England v Scotland game a West Indian porter at the railway station said Sammy was the first black Scotsman he'd ever met :greengrin

PS I think he meant Napoli as opposed to Juve :greengrin

I would be about 12 when I first met him and he never spoke like any Scotsman (or anyone for that matter) I had ever met! And unlike his auld cohorts you will recall that he said EVERYTHING with a smile on his face. especially if it meant the bus stopped for a pint at Strathaven, Laurencekirk or somewhere.....

I don't know Sammy well, and have only spoken to him in the passing over the years but he seems to leave a lasting impression on the folk he meets.
Just hope something can be done to ensure our Cup Final day is a special one for him, whether it's at Hampden or not, sounds like he deserves it.

I remember seeing Sam and a friend at one of the first games I went to as a kid, it was about 1978, and they were standing at the top of the old east terrace watching the match, Sam had an overcoat on and was wearing a bunnet and I always remember thinking how odd it was that this old black guy (he must have been in his 60s by then) was here watching the Hibs, it's a joy to know that he will possibly see us lift this trophy at last , hope he gets to the final itself :greengrin

For me Sammy ... who I wasnt even aware of until now .... sums up everything I want Hibs to stand for. A club where everybody is included and there is only one colour ( Green ) and as long as you can say Hubz you are in :greengrin

It would be great if the club could find a place for Sammy in the posh seats on cup final day if he is able to attend.

Makes you think too ....... 60 odd years ago somebody said to Sammy " you will be safe here " ..... that was in the days when nobody would look at you twice if you were openly racist. It gives me a warm glow that a Hibs fan was able to reassure him, even in those days.

Would any of the ethnic minority residents of Leith who Hibs are trying to attract to ER be able to feel "safe" if the heard the 'Edinburgh' song walking along Albion Road ....... Folk like Sammy are the very reason we need to stamp that ***** out.

Sorry .. hijacked the thread a wee bit .... but its a subject I feel strongly about.

I know three of his grandchildren. One of them telling me a story about his granddad having a photo of him in his younger days and when he meets a pretty lady he takes the photo out and ask them if they would've courted him back then! Cracks me up that story.

A truly great story however after reading this part:

Thinking about it logically (after a few pints this afternoon:wink:) maybe expecting Sammy, at the age of 102, to be able to travel to Hampden is being a tad optimistic.
However, I hope Hibs can do something to make it a special occasion for him - even if it's only a supply of his favourite tipple to quaff at home while watching the game on tv with his family and a seat on the open top bus (hopefully ) when the Cup comes home to ER.
The ball's in Hibs' court and the chance of some positive publicity in this human interest story beckons.
Come on Hibs show us you care!!!

You are right it would probably be too much for him. Why can't we get him some things for this special day. As you say, his favourite tipple. A Hibs top with 102 on the back and some other Hibs bits and pieces..I could send a donation via paypal to Hibs net if admin would allow.... Thoughts
