Has anyone seen this? I'm just on ep 2 on Virgin Media catch up, really enjoying it as I like to watch people do things I would/could never do... I.e. camping! But this Scottish guy is doing it for 3 months in the wilderness on his own!

Do any of you reckon you could do it? And basically survive by living off the land and fishing/hunting?

Yes. Might sound like a nutter but I love all that sort of thing. The more extreme the better. Come close to disaster on a few occasions. Closest shave was having to sit out a white-out sheltering in a snow hole on a mountain top in arctic Norway for 6 days. Would love to do the South Pole.

That does sound extreme! Were you on your own? Do you reckon you could hack rural Canada with only basic oats and rice supplies whilst having to hunt your own food etc on your own?

Excellent book and film about this guy - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_McCandless

Nowhere near as extreme in terms of self sufficiency in outdoor pursuits but have done a few long(ish) treks and some minor climbs, you see some great sights.

I am a bit of a sap in that i enjoy a shower and a couple of beers after said outdoor pursuits so i will not be hooking up with Hiberlin and W67 anytime soon.:greengrin

I've seen a few of them and would love to give a desert island type thing a try :agree:. There really good but when I watch the celeb ones I sometimes wonder just how alone they really are. The Freddie Flintoff one for example, honestly what was he going to do if some big lion waltzed buy. Must have been some bloke sitting in a tree or there were NO lions within 100 miles of him.

Would love to take you up on your suggestion buddy but so many things would now stand in the way of me actually realising that wish nowadays that I think it will forever remain a dream.

Pipe and slippers for me on strict orders from the present Mrs Hiberlin. Still, if you do get a plan together I'd be keen to hear it.

Like you a heck of a lot of things would stand in my way, the main thing istrying to get a long term injury sorted before I could even consider something so demanding, I can assure you though if I did go through with this or even consider taking it a wee bit further I'll let you know.

You only live once and all that :cb

No, there was a few of us on a military exercise that went a bit pear shaped. About half the guys went down with hypothermia and it snowballed due to incorrect casualty procedures at the time.

The procedure at the time was to help casualties retain their core body temperature by getting into a sleeping bag with them, this however proved to be a mistake due to the fact that it actually reduced the body temperature of the healthy individuals to that of the casualties, thus creating more casualties.

Now you would place any exposure casualty in their own sleeping bag inside your sleeping bag with you to ensure that body heat los from both is kept to a minimum.

Canada is a very varied enviroment. I think it would be difficult to scrape a living from the land on the great plains, as I recall there was very little there other than rolling hilly land scape with miles and miles of grass and not much else. However the mountainus regions would provide a wide variety of food sources.

No pipe and slippers though :-)

Yep, and even that's damn short. At some point all of us will only have the memories, so make sure you make enough of them to tide you over the winter.
