Toxic Sofas

Watchdog did a bit on this a couple of years ago, I wondered if anyone on here had experience of it?

Reason I ask is I've had a rash for about a year, coincendentally the same time I moved house and got a new leather sofa from DFS. I've been to the doctors about it about 10 times now, they've tried to diagnose it and come up with like 6 different explanations but nothing that they've ever prescribed has helped. I don't know why it's taken so long to link it to the sofa but I think that might well be the problem. The rash is most severe on the back of my neck, my right hand/wrist/arm, and the backs of my legs. Which are all places my skin is in direct contact with the sofa. It's worse now than it's ever been.

Could just be a coincedence though, but I doubt it.

A woman at my work had the same thing on the back of her legs from a DFS sofa. Chemical burns.

She got rid of the sofa and the burns have healed. It's worth looking into.

When I was at Uni we had a toxic sofa in our flat.

Wasn't from DFS - it was more to do with the intestinal consequences of four guys living on curry and sitting on it.

(The sofa, not the curry. Well, sometimes both.)

Put a throw/cover over the bit you sit on and see if it clears up. Could take a few weeks before it clears so be patient.

Could you maybe have an experiment and sit on a dinning room chair/bean bag for a month or so and see how the rash reacts? Obviously not the greatest plan but it will save you binning the couch and buying a new one to find out its not the problem

Do you have really hot showers?

about 7 years ago when I was an apprentice mechanic i came out with a severe rash pretty much all over my boday and legs, this was agonising and would last weeks at time then seem to heal only to flair up again. after numerous docs tests and fortunes on remedies i was sent to a skin place who said i had a reaction to coolant and oil. i left the mechanics which seemed to work but then it started coming back every few weeks and going again this went on for years until recently.

My bathroom was knackerd and I had to have a bath for about 8 weeks as the shower wasnt working my rash cleared up properly for the first time in years and i was delighted i had one shower when it was fixed, a really hot shower as i always did and an hour later my ezcema had flared right up again it then dawned on me it may have been the heat of my showers, ive since gone back to having a bath al lthe time and have been fince ever since. just somthign to try :aok:

I do like a scalding hot shower in the morning....no a fan of baths, but also not a fan or rashes. I'll have to consider this. Maybe the next thing after avoiding the couch. Avoiding the couch and having baths instead of showers at the same time would just connfuse me if the rash did go away.

Rash Watch 2012 - antibiotics clear up the infection but the rash remains. Have avoided the sofa, but after a week no difference.

Could it be the hot showers as Deano recommended? Possibly, time will tell.

I've considered a live webcam, maybe attached to my watch so it can be seen 24/7. I'll approach Ch5 to see if they're interested. Maybe Richard Bacon or Melinda Messenger or her off The Apprentice can host some kind of show about it?

RASH WATCH UPDATE 08/05/12

Have avoided the leather sofa, although still having my doubts this has been the cause of the rash. A visit to see Dr Marchant-Wink (that's his real name, nice guy and, of my experience of him so far, a very good doctor) was a success of sorts, having seen a different doctor the previous occassion who thought that antibiotics would stop me wanting to rip the skin literally off my hand. Dr Marchant-Wink prescribed, as well as some strong anthistimines to help me sleep, a potent steroid cream which has completely cleared up the unsightly rash. People sit next to me on the bus again and kids dont go running away screaming when they see me anymore.

It still itches though. I think the steroid cream is making it look better cosmetically but not treating the underlying problem. I'm clearly having a reaction to something. The couch? Hmmmm....I don't really think so, I'm still itchy and I've not touched it for ages. Cabbage (my dog, not the vegetable, though i did have some of that the other day, with corned beef hash, £2.50 for a can of corned beef! scandalous, but anyway...), I don't see it being the dog, the rash was only on one hand and Cabbage jumps all over me, I'd have the rash on both hands at least. Washing powder, can't be that, been using the same stuff for years. Can't think of anything else though.

Been referred to the dermatologist at Lauriston Place, should have an appointment within the next 6 weeks, stay tuned for your next instalment of rash watch.:greengrin

Always use the Fairy non-bio powder, the wife to be deals with this sort of thing though, whenever I use the washing machine I apparantly "do it wrong"...

It was the first time I'd seen him, he just seemed like a really nice person to deal with, we had a wee chat about his dogs. In the end, he gave me a steroid cream that cleared up the rash on my hand, so a win on all fronts really.

Dr Marchant-Wink effectively saved my dads life, he was the first doc to pick up just how ill my dad was and sent him straight to the western. he had leukeamia and without treatment only had a couple of weeks left. That was nine years ago and he has been here to see his grandchildren grow up.
