View Full Version : Scottish Football's Greatest 100

Thanks to the admin for letting me post this.

I'll introduce myself - I run www.theawayend.net. Basically, we've launched a search for the greatest 100 players in Scottish football history.

Votes alone will dictate who is in the top 100, and the positions where everyone from 100 to 21st finish. After that, a panel of experts (ie, not us) will pick from the list of top 20 players and decide the final position they all finish in.

On the site, we've had guest articles from the likes of Richard Gordon and John Mackay saying who they would pick, with loads more still to come.

To vote, we're asking you to pick your top five Hibernian players of all time, and your top five from everyone else. They can be from any era, Scottish or foreign, as long as they played for a Scottish club (so George Best is eligible, Denis Law isn't).

Just post your votes below and I'll count them up and add them to the count.

You can put your top five in any order, they don't get more votes for what position you've put them in. So just five Hibs players, and five opponents.

How can the only Scot who has been European player of the year not be eligible? You can't list Scotland's best without mentioning the Lawman.

Interesting to see how easily this gets narrowed down to 5:

Well aware I'm too young to have seen most of my nominations play for Hibs, but their place in the history books is very well founded indeed, so as such:

Arthur Duncan
Gordon Smith
Eddie Turnbull
Pat Stanton
Lawrie Reilly

But then, how can you leave the likes of Baker, Johnstone, Ormond, McColl, Best, Riordan, Sauzee or Rae out of the list...

The other 5 - I'm going for players I'm old enough to remember having played, as I can't necessarily appreciate the history of all the other clubs and the great players who have gone before:

Brian Laudrup - an absolute wizard with the ball at his feet, and to date, I've yet to be as amazed watching a player in the SPL

David Fernandez - didn't quite set the heather alight in the SPL, but I watched him rise through the leagues and if he could have remained free from injury, he'd have gone much further

Henrik Larsson - didn't just know how to find the net, but his all round ability was amazing - always have hated Celtic, but I really respected Larsson and it was great to watch him ply his trade in Scotland for a while

Giovanni van Bronkhorst - the guy went on to play for Barcelona, which gives an insight into his brilliance - so tactically aware, devastating going forward and boy, could he find the net

John Robertson - caught the tail-end of his career and even then he knew the route to goal - he might have cause us some grief over the years, but his record speaks for itself.

That's a fair point, and who is the top Scottish scorer in European competition history - is it still Peter Lorimer? another who played his career outside Scotland in his entirety.

But, back to Hibs

Top 5

Gordon Smith
Pat Stanton
Lawrie Reilly
Joe Baker
Eddie Turnbull

Others 5

Billy McNeill
Alan Morton
Willie Miller
Kenny Dalglish
Billy Bremner :)

Because it's based on the Scottish League.

Both lists are based on the players that I have seen however one Hibs player in there I haven't seen but my old man loved him enough to name me after him so I thought I better stick him in:

Hibs 5

Frank Sauzee
Russell Latapy
Gordon Smith
Keith Wright
John Collins

Other 5

Henrik Larsson (Best player ever to grace SPL in my time watching)
Rino Gattuso (Loved his heart, passion and will to win everything... wish we had that type of player in our team)
Brian Laudrup (Amazing, only way to describe him)
Craig Gordon (Saved the S*um so many times throughout a season... was delighted to dee him move to England)
Michael Mols (Before the injury he was unbelievable)

Looking at my other 5 selection I'm sickened at the rangers love fest I have got... I'm putting it down to me being brought up in the generation where they won the 9 in a row.

Hibs players from my time watching:

Collins
Goram
Sauzee
Latapy
Riordan

Other 5, again from my time:

Laudrup
Gascoigne
Larrson
Klos
Numan

Annoyed the other 5 all had to be OF players with such a Rangers bias but everyone of them was outstanding in their respective position.

Ormond, Johnstone, Turnbull and Stanton just miss out.

Scotland:

Alan Morton
Jimmy Johnstone (far better than Best ever was btw)
Willie Miller
Kenny Dalglish
Danny McGrain

Henrik Larssen just misses out. And no Baxter - fine player but overhyped for doing it twice against England which gives England importance they do not deserve.
