The police officer shot and blinded by gunman Raoul Moat has been found dead at his house in Northumberland.
shame, i really felt for the poor guy
That's genuinely heartbreaking.
Some people actually viewed Moat as some sort of anti-establishment hero figure. I hope their sleep is slightly disturbed after hearing this but I doubt it will be.

Dreadful news, innocent victim in the wrong place at the wrong time.
News article didn't elaborate other than mentioning recent "concerns for his welfare". Was it a suicide? If so, totally dreadful that he was driven to it. RIP.

A genuine shame. I seen him on BBC Breakfast sometime last year and was amazed at his courage and determination to help other Policemen who had been injured in the line of duty.

Yes, there was a facebook page (what else?) dedicated to 'Moaty the legend'. Since this twat's death he's taken another two with him - the policeman and a director of the firm that made the 'shotgun' tazer device.
Evil beyond belief, and a paedophile, anyone who thinks he's a 'legend' needs euthanised.

Terrible news.
Must have been so, so hard for him trying to cope with the loss of his sight, end of his Police career and break up of his marriage.
Thoughts go to him and his family.

I must have missed this, why were folk calling him a legend?

A coward, who was able to shoot others at close range, but couldn't hit his own brain when the gun was at his chin. Best forgotten about IMO.

Heard this news this morning and I was genuinely quite upset when I heard about it.
I knew that he hadn't been coping too well with what had happened to him and that his marriage had ended but I didn't realise it was as bad as it's obviously turned out to be.
As others have said, it absolutely beggars belief that Raoul Moat received any kind of recognition from the public in the aftermath of his own death, considering what he had done to so many innocent people. PC Rathband is basically another victim of his as there is no doubt whatsoever in my mind that Moat's actions have caused PC Rathband's eventual death.
I sincerely hope that Raoul Moat's rotting in Hell as we speak.

Hear, hear FH, I tend not to get involved with the emotional outpouring of grief on the net when somebody dies, but, this is a genuinely deserving occasion.
Can't even begin to imagine what the guy has gone through both physically and emotionally.
The news at teatime showed an interview with him describing how he tried to get through the day, before he broke down in tears when stating he would never get to see his daughters wedding dress or who she was marrying, it was quite an emotional couple of minutes.

Absolutely tragic.
I genuinely felt for the guy upon hearing the news yesterday that he'd taken his own life - he must have went through hell, one that most people can barely imagine, between the day he was shot and the day he decided to end it all.
As for 'Moat fans', almost as bad as the twat himself, sick beyond belief.

I've often heard suicide described as a permanent solution to what is usually a temporary problem, but considering his situation and all that he had lost, it is completely understandable and so tragic.

Bunch of anti-police geordie schemies, to whom anyone in a polis uniform is seen as an enemy. Unfortunately in many big cities this appears to be the majority viewpoint amongst the "rednecks"
BTW I'm not anti geordie got some great mates from that city, and happen to think Northumberland is one of the best parts of the British Isles

I'm a bit like yourself, I tend not to get caught up in all the public displays of emotion when someone dies but I did find this pretty upsetting.
I saw an excerpt last night on the news from an interview he did last year when he described how hard it is to wake up every morning and only see darkness.
I cannot begin to imagine how hard that must be for anyone, let alone someone who has been blinded in such a horrific way.
It really is the most awful situation that he found himself in and I'm just so sorry for everyone who knew him that he felt the only way he could cope was to end his own life.
It's just tragic.

There have only been a few news stories that have truly affected me - to the point I almost cried and this is one of them. It's such a sad, sad end for this guy who, as someone else said, just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Maybe it was for my poor grammar :greengrin
It was supposed to read that I have great friends in Newcastle AND I like Northumberland (Northumbria) too, It's all North East England, even with my poor grasp of geography! Incidentally Goosano where is Rothbury? (Rhetorical question BTW).

Newcastle is in Tyneside but (though I would say this) there was a lot more plankton celebrating Moat from without the region than within it.
The stuff about 'schemies' and 'rednecks' is beyond the pale and I'd think the same if you were talking about Brummies or Devonians.
Let yourself down a wee bit there.

[B]A sweeping generalization I'll grant you, however I didn't notice hordes of bank managers and solicitors shouting "go on Roule son" to the TV cameras during the stand off in Rothbury.
So how would you describe the type of people who were pro Moat? Not being provocative I'm genuinely interested.
Oh and just in case you think I have something against people who live in housing schemes I'm sitting typing this in one right now, and have at some time in my life lived in Raploch, Cultenhove and Cornton
Reckon most older Geordies would still claim that Newcastle is in Northumberland (or perhaps ON Tyneside).....I can't get to grips with all these new fangled unitary authorities and metropolitan burgh councils

I'm really objecting to 'Geordie schemies' and 'rednecks' for reasons mentioned. How would I describe Moat's fans? Well, regardless of income, I'd describe them as plankton (another unpleasant term, but without pejorative or borderline racist connotations) and, in the main, very sad and misguided individuals.
With regard to your quote above, I'd have to differ and I hate to pull rank, but I think I'm better informed on this one than you. Most Novocastrians wouldn't claim to be from Northumberland, nor Newcastle itself, they'd self identify as 'Geordies'. Technically, being born in Hexham, I am a Northumbrian, but I am up to speed on this.
As was mentioned earlier in this thread, what about the plankton that came up from down south for the beast's funeral?
Anyway, we're getting OT. I - and I think (thankfully) that we're seeing 100% concurrence on this thread - that it's a terrible shame what happened to PC Rathband and it's a source of deep embarrassment to me that Moat also came from my neck of the woods. The embarrassment turns to anger when Moat became established as some sort of anti-hero as in addition to what he did in 2010, there was much more besides, some of it quite stomach-churning.

I think we definitely agree on that one at least :greengrin
I withdraw the "Geordie" and "schemie" remarks but reserve the right to use redneck, as I think it describes these individuals quite well.
What I was trying to get across (perhaps not too well) is that there is, in the UK, a certain "class" who see anyone in any uniform as an enemy, and to them anyone taking any sort of illegal action against this establishment, such as Moat did, is seen to be some kind of latter day Robin Hood (sorry Nottingham ).
