Hearing from sources in the know Walter Smith has been approached by wolves, as they seek a replacement for McCarthy. Great appointment for them i reckon, a lot of respect for the guy as well, even if he is one of them.

They are doing everything in their power to avoid giving Bruce the job.

Unsure about Walter, he undoubtedly did well at Rangers but didn't he struggle at Everton?

Thought he did quite well at the Toffies based on the situation from memory. Basically a team was sold from under him and he kept them in the EPL which had been a bit of a near thing under the last incumbent I think. Any Everton fans care to comment/correct me?

After qualified success in his native Scotland, Smith's retirement lasted a month as he took the manager's job at Premier League (http://www.hibs.net/wiki/Premier_League) club Everton (http://www.hibs.net/wiki/Everton_F.C.) in June 1998.[5] (http://www.hibs.net/#cite_note-4) Smith replaced Howard Kendall (http://www.hibs.net/wiki/Howard_Kendall) after his third spell as Everton manager, having only avoided relegation in 1998 due to their superior goal difference (http://www.hibs.net/wiki/Goal_difference) over Bolton Wanderers (http://www.hibs.net/wiki/Bolton_Wanderers_F.C.).
Initially Smith was linked with the managers job at Sheffield Wednesday,[6] (http://www.hibs.net/#cite_note-years-5) but false promises made to him by the Everton chairman of massive transfer funds and unlimited ambition lured Smith to Goodison Park.[6] (http://www.hibs.net/#cite_note-years-5) Smith spent money on players only to discover that it was money the club did not have.[6] (http://www.hibs.net/#cite_note-years-5) When Duncan Ferguson (http://www.hibs.net/wiki/Duncan_Ferguson) was sold behind Smith’s back he was tempted to quit.[6] (http://www.hibs.net/#cite_note-years-5) The remainder of his time at Everton revolved around selling the club's top players to balance the books.[6] (http://www.hibs.net/#cite_note-years-5)
Under Smith, Everton finished in the bottom half of the table for three consecutive seasons. The Everton board finally ran out of patience with Smith and he was sacked in March 2002 after an "abject"[6] (http://www.hibs.net/#cite_note-years-5) 3–0 FA Cup Sixth Round defeat to Middlesbrough (http://www.hibs.net/wiki/Middlesbrough_F.C.), with Everton in real danger of relegation from the Premier League.
He was replaced by David Moyes (http://www.hibs.net/wiki/David_Moyes), who delivered Everton to a safe finish in fifteenth place

Sounds like he was badly treated by the board to be honest. Everton's chairman Bill Kenwright is a buffoon, his strategy is to run the club at a loss each year and get into more debt until someone rich enough to take the club forward comes along.

The thing is, Everton are in so much debt and badly need a new stadium so its going to take a hell of a lot of money to get that club moving in the right direction again. Makes the job Moyes has done all the more remarkable, I really hope he gets the United job when Fergie retires.

Cant understand why that money chasing bawbag is put on a pedestal and touted when every job comes up.

He spent Rangers into near oblivion hoovering up trophies like a demented coke head by spending money he didn't have.

He massively underwhelmed at Everton - they may be skint but he operated nowhere near to Moyes's level.

He proved a treacherous character while in the Scotland job.

If Wolves want to rubber stamp their relegation, this is the appointment to make.

:agree:

I don't think he is the right man for a relegation battle which Wolves are in either.
