Trouble at football matches here is nothing compared to a match today in Egypt where at least 73 people have been killed, crazy stuff.

At least 73 people have been killed in fan clashes following a football match in the Egyptian city of Port Said, state television reports.
The deaths occurred after supporters invaded the pitch following a match between top-tier clubs Masry and al-Ahly on Wednesday.
It is feared the death toll could rise as scores have been injured.

I read about the Egyptian fans the other day. Its much more about political elements than we'd be familiar with here. It may be that some of the Mubarak forces were involved and it should be seen as an extension of counter-revolutionary violence rather than a simple clash between mental 'ultras'.

Awful.

yes they're for the cops. who just stood and watched. there's a political context to this, in that the fans who seem to have been on the recieving end (Ahly) were prominent in Tahrir Square during last years events. they were often involved in fights with the police, defending the square from being cleared.

there will no doubt be many conspiracy theories emerging over there, and there's probably some validity to one or two. the BBC line of "violence is common at Egyptian football matches" is a bit thick, and 1 dimensional. nothing anywhere near as bad as this has ever happened before.
