normally we have a good start to the season (when we have a "good" season, casuse obv we are *****, not matter how high in the league we are or how long a cup run we have) then we go to pots a bit at the 2nd half of the season

He's never going to be maradona but I think Scott in recent weeks has been much better than last season

Took longer than a couple of seasons, but Tommy McIntyre was honking for ages before developing into one of our better centre halves.

Stuart Lovell took a long time to win over a lot of fans but proved to be a pretty decent player.

Seem to recall Matty Jack being a bit ropey as a CH, but he was certainly 'the man' when they pushed him into midfield :greengrin

I didn't think Pat Stanton looked up to much when he first appeared.

Not with Hibs but Drogba was panned in England during his first season with Chelsea.

Think McIntyre intially played right-back, as Mitchell and Rae tended to play centre-half until Rae moved on, Mitchell moved to left-back and Hunter and McIntyre paired up in the centre. I'm wracking my brains, but Jack is the last one I can think of in recent years that was markedly better in season 2.

In the dim and distant past when players were signed it wasn't always to have an instant impact but to become past of the squad for the future and at first may look a little out of their depth.

Fortunately for them though not all games were televised and any errors over analysed by wannabe pundits on message boards, they also had the benefit of a fairly competetive reserve league where young players could push for a place in the first team and recovering injured players had the opportunity to find fitness and form again before having to face an increasingly critical fanbase.

I also wonder sometimes if the patience I have with results and players is due to the fact that my support of Hibs really started in the early to mid 80's when we started every season hopefull that we would comfortably avoid relegation, get the long awaited win over Hearts and maybe a decent cup run as realistically that would be considered a good season.

McIntyre arrived as a left back from Aberdeen and it was only when paired with Hunter in the centre that he showed some form.

Agree with the poster who said Chris Hogg... He was average at the start but got better, especially when Collins was in charge.

Sauzee joined us around Feb 1999 and didn't look great at first (probably because most of his team mates weren't on his wavelength). But he was better the following season and then even better in 2000/01 when he moved to sweeper.

Boy, could we do with another Sauzee now - an experienced, classy player in defence who could create attacks with one pass. And he could whack in 30 yarders from all angles. He could probably have solved all our problems in one go. Well, some of them .

Steven Whittaker had a poor time when he first came into the first team and it was only when Mowbray moved him to right back that he turned into a player of real value to the team and showed some consistency.
