Would agree. Only slight against them is that they should have won more Champions Leagues with that team. Think even Ferguson has admitted that.

Irwin and Johnsen were reaching the end of their careers though and didn't Schmeichel move to Villa not long afterwards? Took Utd years to recover from that, and it could be said the same has happened after Van der Sar's retirement.

To think they won the Champions League Final without Scholes & Keane, albeit a tad fortunately, shows the strength of the squad.

Having forwards such as Cole, Yorke, Sheringham & Solskjaer had a massive bearing on that season also.

Obviously before my time but it proves how important it is to have a good keeper :agree:

What a midfield.

And I doubt that he played Giggs on the right and Beckhm on the left too often. Modern managers take note!!

That week was a pretty poor one as a kid at school who had to put up with Utd winning the treble, City getting promoted from Division Two and Bolton losing the play off final to Watford - it was just before the internet explosion so I couldn't quite enjoy the 'Great Adventure' either! Having said that, Utd's performance away to Juventus in the semi (?) was absolutely unreal, sheer class that night.

Roy Keane was truly inspirational that nite against Juve...knowing he was going to miss the final, but still leading from the front to get his team there.

I'm sure Schmeichel had a couple of years at Sporting Lisbon before he went to Villa.

Doesn't take away from yourpoint though that United took a long time to replace him, they arguably never really did until Van Der Sar came along.

It's also interesting to see how quicklythat team was broken up after winning the Champions League. Schmeichel moved on, Irwin and Johnsen did likewise, Beckham was sold about 3 years later, Yorke and Cole both moved on or played bit part roles quite soon after and Stam was sold only a year or 2 later as well.

Had forgotten about Schmeichel going to Lisbon, fair point. I remember him being a select band of ex-United players who were applauded at the Reebok rather than being booed.
