Christopher Hitchens died today of oesophegal cancer.
Regardless of your views on religion or Iraq, I think there can be little doubt that he was an outstanding orator. Personally, I agreed pretty much wholeheartedly with his views on religion, much less so with his views on the war in Iraq. Interesting also that two brothers (Him and the odious Peter) could be so far apart politically.
If you're interested in watching or listening to Hitchens, there is a great channel on youtube called christopherhitchslap which has full length debates Hitchens undertook with various theists.

He polarised opinion. Whenever I saw him on TV or heard him on the radio I usually shouted at the guy or just turned him off. A polemicist with not much tolerance for the opposite view. He deserves respect for his intellectual powers though, a truly clever man.

His "odious" brother has written a very moving tribute to him in today's Daily Mail.

I hardly share anything in common with Christopher Hitchens, as you can probably imagine, but I have total respect for anyone who has the courage to face their battle with a terminal illness such as cancer in the way that he did.

The quotation marks are unnecessary, Falkirk. Peter Hitchens is odious. A vile human being. He probably knows it himself.

I thought the title of his thesis "Missionary position"
Sorry regarding the missionary position title, ***** like that just makes me feel he was an angry, aggressive troll. I mean if you are that intelligent why be so provocative/offensive.

Although in fairness when you hear the arguments he makes in support of his stance on Mother Theresa it does tend to make one see why he is so adamantly anti her reputation.
The fact that that he was so vehement in his opinion is the jarring element given her reputation. Dismissing him as a troll in this case is to dismiss the argument in an ad hominem fashion.

By by ego soaked current Trotskyist popinjay George Galloway, so high praise in my book.
A fine thinker and writer, who like Nick Cohen and others was appalled and disgusted by the intellectual Left's loss of moral compass during the Nineties and Noughties - in paticular their support of Milosevic and his genocidal regime, and their uncritical advocacy of the likes of Hezbollah. (Harold Pinter's founder membership of the Campaign to Defend Slobodan Milosevic particularly sickened him) At his best however, on the topic of religion.
As for his brother, I feel for his loss, but he is a truly odious individual.

I just got his book 'Arguably' for christmas, from someone who enjoys winding me up politically. Even the chapter titles tell me i'm going to find it very annoying.

Hitch made that Dundee-Celtic windbag Galloway look like a fool, I was a great admirer if Christopher, his writings on religion were second to none.
