With public confidence in MPs at an all-time low following the expenses scandal, hundreds of thousands striking over pension rights and amidst talk of further austerity measures, should we even be surprised that the Speaker of the House of Commons had used over £37,000 of public money to commission a portrait of himself and his own coat of arms.

Doesn't everyone already have a coat of arms?

Gosh, he must be a proper plebeian.

Its one of the perks that go with the role of being the speaker. But you would think at a time when the countries on its knees they would all show some constraint. It is time for the UK parliament to modernise. The speakers roles is important but the excess in the pomp and ceremony around it is unnecessary

Without pomp and ceremony this country would go to the dogs. He can spend what he likes on what he likes. 'all are equal' is a peculiar motto though, surely hes being ironic?

My problem is with just how much public money he has spent. Be a different matter if it was his own cash.

Surely he could have just gone to a Primary School to come up with a similar coat of arms to save a few bob - looks about P5 standard I'd say.

Embarrasing both politically and aethetically

I hadn’t noticed it was from that long ago, what a bizarre thread to resurrect.

Aye OK.

I suppose, Bercow, who now resides in the Labour party shows how things change, just like the mire the UK now finds itself in.

Wasn't intentional! I did a search on Bercow threads to see if the bullying report had had already been mentioned and must have opened the wrong thread in error.

As you say it's a bizarre one...
