Hibs Books

Is there a definitive list of Hibs related books available anywhere?

I am looking to build up my collection and there are some by people I have never heard of and getting some others is like finding goldust!

Its also quite confusing as some authors seem to have multiple books with very similar titles? (excluding volume 1 2 & 3!)

I notice Volume 2 of John Campbells' book is coming out, what happened to volume 1? I cant find it anywhere.

Book one of my trilogy is written (as is book two and most of book 3 :greengrin) and the original launch date was July 2011 but the publisher has decided to approach it from a different angle and I understand it is the intention to release the trilogy as a box set in July 2012. It's the same publisher that published Alan Lugton's "The Making of Hibernian" trilogy and the intention there is to re-publish them also as a box set and in July 2012. The aim is to offer up a complete history of Hibernian FC from 1875 to date.

I'm assured that all six will also be available singly as the cost of anyone buying all six at once might be quite scary :greengrin I also understand my trilogy will be available as ebooks :agree:

Yes indeed, the first ihibs book should be available in the next couple of months. I'm just ironing out a few glitches and errors but you can get an idea here: http://www.fitbastats.com/hibs/misc_book.php. Fitbastats has taken a bit more of my time than originally planned and now has Rangers & Celtic versions.

I'm also working on another book for publication The Hibs Miscellany which is due for publication June 2012.

There are three other publications which will will/may be published later this season-

Peter Cormack's autobiography - 'From the Cowshed to the Cop', due out next spring (Originally to be called From Leith to Liverpool)

And two publications which I am working on, 'The Hibernian History Handbook', which I will be publishing myself and should be on sale before Christmas and covers the history of the club, season by season from the arrival of the founders from Ireland until the start of this season. It will cover all major events, players and games in the clubs history and will be used a quick reference book.

The second is in association with the Former Players Association, I am still in the process of getting a publisher, the title (still to be finalised) will be From the Terracing to the Touchline, and is the stories of Hibs fans who made the transition from just supporting the club to playing for them.

The first book has the whole squad in their Umbro 'Insave' shirts in front of the Dunbar end on the cover. This book goes up to 1985.

The updated copy has more of a team shot on the cover with them wearing the Adidias 'P&D Windows' shirts.

When I was a kid I circled the 22-1 score against the 42nd Highlanders and the 15-1 against Peeble rovers so I could show my pals :faf:
I'm sure it had every score up to that point at the back of the book.

Got them both! Both excellent reads and very well researched. I would thoroughly recommend them to any HIBS fanatic. I emailed the publisher re book 3 but they kept fobbing me off. Seems a real shame that book 3 will never see the light of day.

Yes they are both good books and I was looking forward to the third as it was to cover 1986 onwards. Exactly matching my Hibs era.

If there is to be no physical launch - would a Kindle launch be feasible? I have the first two on Kindle.

The book you are talking about is the HIBS Story by Mike Wilson an official history of Hibernian football club not an official annual and yes it has an image of McLeishs coupon on the front cover

HIBS and The Pogues by Calum Bruce

During the current enforced three quarter season break I am currently reading and enjoying the above book by Calum Bruce

I almost missed this book on Amazon as I thought it was some obscure Pogues CD

It tells the biographical story of a Perth schoolboy supporting HIBS from afar and attending games home and away from circa 1980 onwards encompassing his love for The Pogues

I am not a big Pogues fan but he has a lot of great stories supporting HIBS that may appeal to HIBS supporters of a certain generation

Certainly a decent read for those looking for a HIBS fix to while away the time

Reading this book at the moment and enjoying it.
My mum as a kid lived 50 yards from Gordon's shop and pub and I managed to get a good and interesting conversation going with her about it last time we met. As those with parents in their 80's will attest that is not always easy!

What about the books on the 2nd shelf? I have always had the same twin obsessions of Football and Music. Football from aged 7 and music from 16. Approaching 60 in the next month and nothing has changed.

The Stuart Cosgrove book Young Soul Rebels (along with his "Detroit 67) has been on my own book shelf for a long time but I haven't got round to reading it. Any good?
Also see the Postcard Records book Simply Thrilled on your shelf. Was really into Postcard back in the day but it was short lived so didn't think their would be enough for a decent book. Any good?

You are also a keen Fall fan. I was never into them massively as a young guy and only owned a compilation but heard loads of sessions on the John Peel Show back in the day. Strangely I like them far more now than I did then. Coincidentally i regularly met up with and drank with Mark E Smith in Leith for a while until I reluctantly decided his habits were too dangerous for my career. Other factoid, a couple of years ago I played competitive table tennis on a number of occasions with one of The Fallen. An intense bloke he was and not surprised he ended fighting with the argumentative wind up artist that Smith was.

Her face lit up and suddenly she had lots to say. Told me about Gordon's dad who served in the shop, her dad drinking in The Right Wing, watching Gordon play for Hibs with her dad etc etc.
Nothing startling but a good catalyst that led on to her speaking about going on the rowing boats with her sisters in St Margarets Loch in Holyrood Park which I was able to show her online photo's off.

I enjoyed Cosgroves book despite not being a Northern Soul aficionado or having any experience of the scene. I do enjoy the music though and this book painted a great picture of the scene through the eyes of a young Scot. If you had experience of the scene I’m sure you’d enjoy it even more. I’m aware of the Detroit ‘67 book and subsequent follow ups, but have yet to take a look at them. The Postcard book is not surprising very short, and that will largely be down the briefness of the period the label was active, but it’s a great read, albeit one not weighty enough that won’t see you through a period of self isolation. Some fantastic books on the Fall out there, and there is one on the bedside table I’m reading currently. Smith was certainly a character and seemed to enjoy his spell in Edinburgh, but unfortunately he seemed to look out for Hearts more than Hibs, but he was never one for following anything that was deemed cool..

As the saying goes - “From little acorns, mighty oaks grow”

Mainly inspired by this thread, I took stock of my Small Hibs related book collection. I had about half a dozen plus a few random Hibs annuals.

I’ve since been picking up more books in the last couple of years and now have a grand total of 88 books that have either direct relevance to the club and its former players (64 books).
A full set of annuals from 2006 to 2020 (15 books).
There are a few stats books included also for seasons we have won leagues or cups. And some photo books I’ve produced myself celebrating that weekend in May 2016. (9 books).

There are around 13 more I have identified that would take the collection to over 100. 10 or 11 of these are relatively easy to obtain via the usual 2nd hand outlets such as ebay or AbeBooks.

However, there’s a few that are harder to come by.

1) The Gilzean Cartoon book (Hibs Flavoured) from the 70s/80s
2) Sandy Macnair’s : We Only Want The Earth (this is my own fault for not purchasing when available)

Mainly inspired by this thread, I took stock of my Small Hibs related book collection. I had about half a dozen plus a few random Hibs annuals.

I’ve since been picking up more books in the last couple of years and now have a grand total of 88 books that have either direct relevance to the club and its former players (64 books).
A full set of annuals from 2006 to 2020 (15 books).
There are a few stats books included also for seasons we have won leagues or cups. And some photo books I’ve produced myself celebrating that weekend in May 2016. (9 books).

There are around 13 more I have identified that would take the collection to over 100. 10 or 11 of these are relatively easy to obtain via the usual 2nd hand outlets such as ebay or AbeBooks.

However, there’s a few that are harder to come by.

I am not old enough to have seen both play at the peak of their powers but they must have been fantastic players. This book makes you appreciate how good these guys really were

theres a chapter entirely devoted to our Scottish cup victory of 1887 and the celebrations that night in little Ireland. Loved it

I can see how that could happen. It was apparently a marketing ploy to give it that title as Fergie only signed 3 outfield player twice in his while career. Dougie had that confirmed as a fact at the same time as he spoke to Sir Alex about providing the foreword.

It will be hard-back only initially with an e-version planned in 2022. A launch and a couple of book signings, featuring ex-players, are in the pipeline. It includes more than 100,000 words, 64 pages of pictures and 40+ interviews with players, managers, directors, journalists and fans.

“ David Duff was Chairman of Hibernian at one of the most extraordinary times in the clubs history. In 1990 Wallace Mercer, then Chairman of Hearts pushed for a merger of the two clubs. For long agonising weeks the fate of one of Scotlands great footballing institutions hung in the balance. With internal shareholders wanting to sell out, with institutions pushing for it, the end seemed inevitable but David Duff had other ideas. With huge fan support he led the charge against a takeover which would have meant the end of the club he loved. There’s quite a few people from that time who will dispute that Duff led us anywhere other than to the edge of oblivion. Like you I’ll probably buy it just for that account, from my memory he had nothing to do with hands off hibs.

To be fair to him he refused to sell his shares and he was opposed to the takeover. I'm sure he was put under considerable pressure. However, many more did much more!

Duff and Gray caused the mess, they gifted shares to Rolland and they ran the club into the ground with bad financial decisions. He didn’t even get close to redeeming himself by not selling his shares. He certainly didn’t lead anyone to victory over Mercer.

Thanks for the update. Will ask my wife for this book 'Bestie to Beastie to Belgium' in December and I look forward to reading it on Christmas Day.

The 80s are the times when I followed Hibs avidly as a teenager. Part of me wishes I was born 10 years earlier (I was born in 1966), so I could have enjoyed the tornadoes properly. My dad, a Jambo, took me to see Hibs in the 70s, but to be honest much as I saw the tornadoes they were a bit of a blur. I saw Hibs against Leeds, Liverpool & Juventus but I do not have clear memories watching them.

My feeling of most of the 80s was Hibs repairing the damage after we declined in the late 70s. I feel it was a long process, particularly at a time when Aberdeen and Dundee Utd were strong. Hibs tended to be a mid-table team for most of the 80s but I have clear and fond memories following the team home and away every Saturday.

As I say I look forward to reading the book and possibly rekindling things I have forgotten about.

The 'quiet and under the radar' part was me getting the book written, but all is good...

"Bestie to Beastie to Belgium: Hibs' green and white knuckle ride through the 80s" has been completed and is currently going through final edits and type-setting in the hope it will be printed and on sale by early December. It will be hard-back only initially with an e-version planned in 2022. A launch and a couple of book signings, featuring ex-players, are in the pipeline. It includes more than 100,000 words, 64 pages of pictures and 40+ interviews with players, managers, directors, journalists and fans.

The ex-players/managers I have interviewed, and who have shared some brilliant stories from the decade, include: Bertie Auld, John Blackley, Ally Brazil, Ralph Callachan, John Collins, Steve Cowan, David Duff, Gareth Evans, Alan Hart, Keith Houchen, Ricky Hill, Jim McArthur, Jackie McNamara, Eddie May, Alex Miller, Callum Milne, Graham Mitchell, Neil Orr, Craig Paterson, Brian Rice, Alan Sneddon, Pat Stanton, George Stewart, Joe Tortolano, Steven Tweed and Mickey Weir.

The author is a good Hibby who posts on here and also wrote an excellent book on our Scottish Cup win and all the Scottish Cup Finals we have been in over the years

There are three other publications which will will/may be published later this season-

Peter Cormack's autobiography - 'From the Cowshed to the Cop', due out next spring (Originally to be called From Leith to Liverpool)

And two publications which I am working on, 'The Hibernian History Handbook', which I will be publishing myself and should be on sale before Christmas and covers the history of the club, season by season from the arrival of the founders from Ireland until the start of this season. It will cover all major events, players and games in the clubs history and will be used a quick reference book.

The second is in association with the Former Players Association, I am still in the process of getting a publisher, the title (still to be finalised) will be From the Terracing to the Touchline, and is the stories of Hibs fans who made the transition from just supporting the club to playing for them.

Did anything ever come of these 2 books?

Its not really about that, its more an attempt to look at how the rivalry came about, evolved etc

On pitch stuff is touched upon (obviously!) but its not a match by match, or season by season account, or anything like that
