Henry J Beans in Rutland Street will close it's doors for the last time on Sunday 9 October. Many a good night spent in Henry's.

Ditto. The current Mrs Beefster wooed me in there.

Was it not Platform One in the late 80s? Great bar for getting served underage, just hide at the back and get your mates to go up if (as I was) you were a 17-year-old who looked about 12.

Indeed. Mrs B likes to regale people with the story of her 15th birthday when she stood on the table in that establishment while the pub sang Happy Birthday. No ID in those days and the boozer stayed open 'til 2am.

Preferred L'attache across the road myself. Some great nights in there

Another good boozer that ceased being interesting after about 1993.

Sneeky Pete's for me. But gone the way of the others now.

The only good thing that came out of that place was getting to know the bouncer Brahim. An exceptionally sound guy and to this day still looks out for me if he is doing the door around the west end.

Sneeky Pete's for me. But gone the way of the others now.

I was in Sneeky's about 15 years ago and chatting to a student nurse. She was very, very sexy and I thought it was going quite well. There was a small group of likely lads nearby who were up from somewhere in England and being fairly boisterous. One of them walked over to my intended solution for my evening's search for romance and tapped her on the shoulder. She turned round and he got his (extremely large, it has to be said) nob out, asking her: 'what do you think of that, then?'

She left with him.

Perhaps I am being over sensitive but I'm sensing an implied question here. It wisnae me.

My favourite Sneeky's story was when chatting up a pretty attractive blonde (I think she may have been a student nurse - a lot of them drank there). I thought she was taking the P when she kept saying "I'm fae Scotland". Eventually she showed me her matriculation card and her name was indeed Fay Scotland. I just couldn't credibly hold it together after that. It still cracks me up.

That's pretty cool, it has to be said.

Otherwise known as "La Trash", unfairly though, had a couple of good nights in there myself. Me and Henry J were best mates when I worked up that end of the toon, sad days, why exactly is it closing? Not enough business? It was always busy when I was in :agree:

It's closing because the Caledonian hotel is undergoing a 24m refurbishement which will see it re-branded as a Waldorf Astoria hotel. The refurb will mean that the space that Henry's currently occupies will become part of the new restaurant.

Sneaky's was the unofficial staff room for Grassmarket bar staff in the 90's. I remember being there one night after work with my staff and several door staff from the area. Everyone in the bar knew each other except one small group of lads. My assistant manager got involved in a ding-dong with one of said lads and got decked at the bar. The look on guys face when the entire pub, including a few rather large, hairy, old school bouncers stood up was hillarious. He soon realised he'd picked on the wrong guy in the wrong boozer!

Sneaky Pete's.....THE best juke box ever!

Absolutely. So much so that our crew periodically attempt to re-create it, which is harder than you might think.

Anyone can kick off with Iggy Pop's 'The Passenger' but it quickly gets quite murky after the first 15 to 20 obvious ones.

The one I'm thinking about was done by my mate who used to manage Sneaky's many moons ago.

Agree Brahim is a good guy, always gave me the benefit if the doubt

I think the second quote answers your question. The pub business is toiling due to licensing restrictions and pricing.

Was always tricky ordering 3 drinks during happy hour. Do you ask for a pint and a half hoping the staff would twig or do you risk asking for 3 and getting 6

I mind one NYE at Henry's getting trashed on Grolschlager and chatting up this stunner. We went to a party and I thought I had hit the jackpot only to fall down the communal stairs and get a black eye :top marks

Yes but in this case it's closing purely because the space it occupies is earmarked for restaurant space in a hotel branded as a Waldorf where the HJB's brand would certainly not fit in.

I agree but it's hardly making millions - went past last Friday and counted 4 people in it :agree:

Ironically the last Friday/Saturday and Sunday of it's existance were the busiest for a long time. Lot's of people enjoying Henry's for one last time :greengrin
