Written by someone who seems to know their stuff. Was the song really sung? If so, it would definitely merit a recall.

Excellent read :agree:

Great article but did anybody else flinch when they read Eddie Turnbull's description of what Hibs did to RotWeiss Essen? To say that we gassed the Germans probably wasn't the best choice of words.

Why ?
Remember this was 1950's many expressions were used then that have long disappeared from our vocabulary
The expression " it was a gas " was in everyday use ( more in England perhaps) when you completed a job/won easily - The word " gassed" was sometimes used to make out you beat your opponents easily
I.E " We gassed them on Saturday "

Good piece except for one glaring error. Aberdeen were never invited to the competition. The French magazine L'Equipe initially invited Hibernian as Scottish representatives, before Aberdeen even won the Championship, then when FIFA took over the running of the trounament they too invited Hibs with the proviso that the following years competition would be between League WInners only.

This clipping tells of Hibernian's invitation at the very earliest stage.

Sir George Graham said today
"When the scheme for the competition was first put up unofficially, Hibernian were among the 16 clubs invited to play in it. Now the chamionship is official we expect Hibernian will be allowed to play at least for the first year, though not necessarily next year."

This article discusses the fact that Hibernian were the only Scottish Club invited and that Rangers, Aberdeen et al would be concerned at not being considered.

It's an internet myth that Aberdeen were ever invited or that Rangers knocked back a place. Hibernian were the only Scottish club ever considered for the tournament.

Enjoyed article myself. Made me forget some of the rubbish we are seeing today. If you enjoyed the article and haven't read either Eddie Turnbull or Lawrie Reilly's books I would strongly recommend you get them.

(Note to self, remember to buy Gordon Smith's book)

No discussion on European football should ever take place without mentioning Bob(later Sir Robert knighted for services to football and Celtic)Kelly's prediction "Like floodlit football,European tournaments have no future".

Considering our present state, that's really twisting the knife in the wound.

Good read. As has been said, you cannot really judge the appropriateness of comments made in the 50s by today's standards.
