What do frequent fliers think of all this? A con by the airlines, or a legit way of rewarding loyal customers?

I fly all the time but every time I go for an upgrade I'm always way back in the queue and seldom get it.

Don't quite follow how it's a con?

I collect miles with BMI and can usually save enough for a trip to the US every year or two. The taxes are pretty high but it still means that flights to the US come in at under half price.

I booked Edinburgh to Vegas for me and Mrs Mikey yesterday for £475 one way. The return flights should be a bit cheaper because the taxes coming this way seem to be a bit cheaper for some reason. So it should be about £700 all in for the two of us.

The biggest problem is availability, having to book pretty far in advance to be sure of getting the dates you want and not always getting the most direct flights. We're going Edinburgh > Heathrow > Toronto > Vegas.

A mixture of both, possibly? In general, when I've tried to use them, there has always been a cheaper way of making the trip (I'm slightly embarassed to have to admit, Bob, that for us mere mortals it's about money off rather than upgrades). Last year,I managed to get half priced tickets for a family of four to Vienna, but that was a first. I'd really like to know how to get the best out of them.

I'm flying business class to Australia then economy to Thailand and economy home.

I used BMI miles to pay so it only cost £700 each in charges and taxes.

A fantastic deal considering business class usually costs thousands.

That is an amazing deal.

Might I ask who you are flying with?

That business class leg to Australia makes all the difference - takes so much of the pain out off it if you can lie flat and doze for a spell..
