They really have sold their souls to the devil, this is the latest instalment in the never ending money merry go round in the EPL that takes the word sport out of football.

Takes me back a few years when this was first talked about - Etihad have of course been involved with City since then.

"does not", "does so" etc etc

Can`t see what all the fuss is about, should having money be only exclusive to certain teams, as for identity if Easter Road was renamed The Bill Gates Arena after a 50,000,000 cash injection it would still be Easter Road to me.

I'm with you. I'd be delighted if Hibs sold the naming rights to ER for a sum that would help us improve the team.

Don't see the problem with renaming the stadium. It's not like they're selling out 100 years of history. And I'd be delighted if Hibs sold the naming rights to the stadium as we'd still be at Easter Road.

Surely leaving Maine Road would have been the bigger sell out? Renaming a purpose-built (local authority funded?) 'City of Manchester' stadium that's only a few years old is hardly selling their souls. They did that a long while back and are unrecognisable from the well-liked club they once were. IMO of course.

I think the OP was referring to the fact that the stadium is now named after their main rivals (no idea if this is the case). In which case, would you accept the money if ER was renamed Heart Stadium?

Depends - what's the equivalent in Arabic - Stadium of sparryheided beasts?

TBH the Man City fans have no real connection to the new stadium, as Maine Rd was their real home. The council originally put a lot of the money up for this stadium , hence the original name, the new owners are doing a lot of redevelopment work in the area and the sourrounds will be called Etihad Campus, putting a lot back into the community as was the agreement when they bought the club.
I noticed during the press conference they called it "Unity" rather than United, a little bit of a sideways look at the meaning of Etihad.

Apparently 'Etihad' means 'union' and not 'united'.

city are not blinded by cash they have spent millions on players and now they need to balance the books for the champions league fair playrules next season so they can play in the tournament.

and everyone calls the stadium eastlands anyway when its really the city of manchester stadium so, no big deal.

Etihad translated literally means "unison, union or alliance"[2] in Arabic, the name deriving from the Arabic for United Arab Emirates (الإمارات العربية المتحدة Al-'Imārāt al-`Arabiyyah

Not so daft after all are they.

That's brilliant!

So City now play at a stadium which is roughly translated into English as the "United Stadium"?

:faf:

I can see a few banners getting made up by the red half of Manchester for the next derby! :greengrin

I think the best translation is 'Unity'.

If Hibs received a £200 million sponsorship deal I wouldn't give a stuff what name Easter Road was technically changed to.

There's already an Etihad Stadium in Melbourne :agree:
