View Full Version : 'Gay' and political correctness

One Day Soon

Perhaps someone can answer a question for me.

I have noticed on 'Two and a Half Men' - among other programmes - that characters will from time to time describe something someone has said or done as 'gay'. How does this work? It sounds politically incorrect but given that it appears within US prime time programming it clearly isn't interpreted that way in the States.

So why is it acceptable to say 'that's so gay' or just 'gay' as a response to something?

I noticed a Good Morning Scotland news item yesterday on NHS intention not to use the term 'homosexual' any longer but to use the term 'gay' instead. Who makes the rules on this stuff?

Maybe Two Carpets could offer this added morsel to our CoS friends to further spice up their contorted difficulties?

This thread is so gay.:greengrin

Maybe because American society is more Christian orientated and is acceptable there. That's just a guess though.

On the nhs part, it could be because gay people would rather be referred to as gay than some politically correct idiot deciding that's how they think they want to be referred to.

The bit in bold was stated at a mandatory Equality and Diversity workshop I attended earlier in the year. Something about the gay community wanting to "reclaim" the word............

I think it'd be great of elements of the bible were re-written for modern readers:

Romans1 26-27

"Because of this, God gave them over to being big buffties. Even their women exchanged natural relations for a bit of girl-on-girl. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were outrageously gay for one another. Men committed a bit of private fun (behind closed curtains mind), and received a stern lesson in morality from the members of Hibs.Net"

I don't have one, I just don't understand why Charlie Sheen can call something gay in his former television series and get away with it, if that use of 'gay' is pejorative? If it isn't pejorative then what does it mean when he uses it?

My kids, and the rest of their generation, appropriated the word years ago. Often used to describe something, or someone as "embarrassing".

No big deal really :dunno:

I dinny ken anything aboot this use of gay by the young folk of the day.

What ah ken is 2 things:

Chuck Norris doesny care if it is politically incorrect, correct or anything else; if you call Chuck Norris gay or even say the word in his earshot (which means the continent he's standing on, as his ears are uber ears) and he will roundhouse your ass to death ten times over cause he can.

And for that matter, so will, Charles Bronson (roughly Death Wish 4 era Bronson).

Just in case, anyone thought aboot putting this debate to these two.

There ye go. Free warnings and good advice, for **** all. Thats ma good deed for the year

See, that would have ended the CoS thread in its tracks!!!!

Because he's a raving nut job, barking in fact. And he's a junkie.

You'll soon not be able to open your mouth without landing yourself in court.

The sooner this politically correct era is over, the better for everyone.

It's just becoming silly now.

Yeah, it's time we were able to call a spade a spade again. It never did any harm at all. :greengrin

I'm starting to detect a change in the air, I noticed on Mock the Week that a comedian was doing an impression of a Nigerian. I actually think most of the African people I know would have laughed at it, in the same way that we laugh at bad Scottish accents. Dara O'Briain was getting a bit humpty about the guy doing it though.

It's a fine line between good natured banter about differences in speech, and Jim Davidson's "Chalky".

I noticed that dara was a bit humpty about it. The lassie from London, nigerian descent, puts on a strong, fake accent to tell her jokes.

I felt that Dara was making more out of it than was really necessary. Fair play to the guy for still doing it though, then taking the mick with a few other accents.

That show got away with a lot, it was quite risque. I didn't watch it (as in every week) but I did catch some re-runs. I thought it was a funny show but when you watch too many of them in quick succession it gets old fast. Well, it did for me.

The kids round here say something is "gay" to mean crap or uncool or similar!

I remember when a certain poster on here was shopping for his wedding invitations in a shop in Stirling (1978 or there abouts) , his future missus spotted some invitations she thought looked nice with the invitation "lets go gay" on them, she couldn't quite understand why we were falling all over the place!:faf::faf:

I could not and would not comment on the intelligence, or lack of, of a woman who dies her hair blonde so as she has an excuse for being thick. :agree:

But she is still lovely

Maybe you should now change your user name to "a certain poster"

I do now wish that we had bought some of those "lets go gay" invitations as no ever believes me when I tell them.
