Anyone else been watching this?

On the one hand I find it fascinating to see the deployment in Afghanistan "from the inside"; on the other, I'm shocked at the apparently mindless way these guys are being used. I have no military training whatsoever but, really, is there no alternative to sending often naive young kids out into an utterly foreign environment, sticking out like a sore thumb, repeatedly stumbling into Taliban ambushes or IEDs? We may have vastly superior technology at our disposal but there seems to be a total lack of ideas at strategic level on how to use it effectively. The film "Restrepo" is in a similar vein. Any armchair generals out there or, better still, Afghan veterans?

I've been watching, the footage of the three year old caught in the crossfire made me cry.
