Well this has certainly opened a can of worms.
Its an astonishing decision by hertz to continue to employ him. Granted i dont know the full details of what happened, though enough detail exists for me to think he should rightly be sacked. Its not at the most serious end of the paedophilia/abuse scale though its most certainly serious enough. God knows what would have happened if he had been allowed to continue with his disgusting behaviour.
His position as a 'public figure' should definately have a bearing on his punishment, not necesarily by the courts, but by his employers. He should not be entitled to retain his position as an 'overpaid' professional player at this moment in time. The players union should also revoke his membership.
I believe people can be rehabilitated in all sorts of ways and if he perhaps showed enough contrition and underwent counciling etc for a couple of years then as a society we should be open to the idea of him returning. To be allowed to continue as if nothing has happened is appalling.
Child abuse is a real problem in our society and we have to recognise that in the main its not total strangers preying on our kids like some sort of 'cartoon' baddie. Some 97% of sexual abusers are known to their victims and more than 90% are family members. There is a fairly good chance that we have all stood/sat beside a paedophile (convicted or not) at football matches at some point in our life.
I am very aware of the hysteria that this subject causes and it never serves the debate any good.
The knee jerk reactions and mob mentality make me very uneasy.
Chris Morris's brass eye satire was a perfect example. He was called a sicko and a pervert on one page of a tabloid, while the following page had a photo of Atomic Kitten in schoolgirls uniforms!!
I think we have to be very careful on how we respond to child abuse. It can end up with mobs led by the likes of 'big' Mags Hainey attempting to act like judge, jury and excecutioner. Or, as happened in the south of england, someone's house being attact as they were registered in the phone book as a paediatrician!!!!
This sort of thing does the victims of abuse no good whatsoever as it deflects attention away from the fact that the majority of these crimes take place in the home. If we shift the emphasis onto the small cases of 'organised' predatory, paedpophiles then the more numerous, familial, perpetrators can run amok.
I'm flabberghasted hertz have allowed CT to continue as a 'representative' of their club, he should rightly have been shown the door. However, the statements attributed to the board are completly outrageous and mind blowingly offensive.
Much as i detest racist MacKay i hope he takes the mad wee pr*ck for every penny he's got.
We have a obvious choice as to which song to play next time they are at ER.
Maybe a suitable reworking of the lyrics would be called for.
