I'm planning on heading down Early Tuesday morning and returning Wednesday afternoon. The cheapest off-peak return seems to be £64, yet when we went by train last year a return was just £45. Am I being daft or have the train companies became robbers over the last year? A £20 jump in price just seems massive over just 12 months?

:aok:

Managing to get from Edinburgh to Preston for £17 and Preston to Edinburgh for £22. Anytime return from Preston - Blackpool is £12 so not as bad as I first thought.

We're Edinburgh to Blackpool (First class I believe) for £35. On the way up it's Blackpool to Manchester for £5 and Manchester to Edinburgh for £15.50.

Train companies can be robbing bassa's. Always worthwhile checking other routes and splitting the journey etc.

Try trains at different times of the day as they can vary quite a lot.

If anyone has got a 16-25 Railcard then book at tpexpress.co.uk/students (http://www.tpexpress.co.uk/students) and you get an extra discount if using one of the Edinburgh-Manchester Airport services that stops at Preston. As an example, if you have a 16-25 railcard and use that link then you can get the 7:42 Waverley-Preston on the Tuesday for £4.95 and then the train back at 14:58 on the Wednesday for £8.40.

I've managed to get train tickets for £4.90 return from Manchester on the Tuesday/Wednesday but just going to get on and off at Bolton on the same route, so might be worth doing similar if changing trains at Preston and seeing how much a Manchester-Blackpool ticket is and using that instead.
