Sound Insulation under Floorboards

I've bought a house and the carpet in the living room is horrible. I want to rip it up, then sand and varnish the floorboards. But, I don't want to be a pain in the arse neighbour to the people downstairs.

I've been looking around online, but wondered if anyone on here has been through the same thing and found a good solution.

Without lifting the floor boards or putting a covering over them I don't think you have many options (apart from wearing rubber slippers all the time!)....this site has a godd summary of what's available though..

I don't mind lifting the floorboards. What would you suggest then? I don't fancy putting anything bulky between joists and the floorboards though, as then I'd have to raise the skirting boards as well.

Easty...I'm no expert in this field but have been looking my self as I want to improve soundproofing in my home when I renovate each room...not started yet so can't give any direct recommendations I'm afraid.

I do know that there is a ton of products on the market but something like this might be more along the lines of what you are looking for:
